Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer Falls To Maine, 2-1

ORONO, MAINE – The Marist women's soccer team relinquished a late goal Sunday afternoon and fell to the Maine Black Bears, 2-1, in non-conference action. The loss moves the Red Foxes to 3-4 overall. The win is Maine's second of the season as they improve to 2-4-1 overall.

SUMMARY
The Red Foxes pressured and controlled much of the action throughout the game but fell victim to opportunistic goals by the Black Bears off set pieces. After leading in shots 5-0, the Red Foxes gave up a penalty kick in the 9th minute of action that Maine would capitalize on. A scramble in front before the end of the half would tie it for Marist but again an opportunistic chance for Maine off a corner kick in the 71st minute would give the Black Bears the winning goal.

KEY PLAYS
  • 9' - Maine would apply its first real pressure of the half and turn it into a score, being awarded a PK after a foul in the box.
  • A goal mouth scramble for Marist would lead to Nicole Sasso notching her second goal of the season. Alexa Svensson picked up the assist, her fifth of the season.
  • Maine would score the game winner on their second corner kick of the game and second shot on goal. The 71st minute tally would be the Black Bears last real chance to score as they locked down and held on for victory.
STAT OF THE GAME
The Red Foxes would out shoot Maine, 14-6 and earn the edge in corners 6-2 but the Black Bears two shots on goal led to two goals.

QUOTE OF THE GAME
"Tough loss for us today, unlike some of our previous games I thought we really controlled possession the majority of the game and limited their quality opportunities. But when they did occur they executed. We had a few good chances late that we need to find a way to get the ball in the back of the net. I think small defensive errors really hurt us today. We will stay positive and try to turn it around at Vermont." - Head coach Gene Smith.

NEXT UP
The Red Foxes will stay in New England to finish out their non-conference play. The women will travel to Burlington, Vermont on Tuesday the 12th for a night game against the University of Vermont Catamounts that will get under way at 6 P.M. Conference play then starts up as the Red Foxes host Rider on the evening of September 16th.
