POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - In the final day of action at the Marist Invitational, freshman Kirsten Ackerman (Guilderland, N.Y.) led the Red Fox women's tennis team as she won both of her matches to claim the Flight C title. The doubles team of senior Erin McCarthy (Salem, N.J.) and Joana Sun (Gales Ferry, Conn.) also was victorious in championship action as they won their semifinal Flight A match.
Ackerman's day began with a three set victory over Providence's Taylor Ahlborn. The freshman won the first set 6-4 before dropping the second 5-7. In the third set, she won by a score of 10-6. In the finals, Ackerman faced off with another Providence player, Caitlin Foley. She had a much easier time with Foley as she defeated her in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2 to win the Flight C title.
In semifinal action of Flight A doubles, the team of McCarthy and Sun won matchup with Providence's Corder and Ramirez 9-8 with a tiebreaker of 8-6. In the finals, the duo fell to Providence's Aviles and Bernardez in a hard-fought match 8-6.
Also of note for the Red Foxes in the final day of action was the doubles team of Joanna Macaluso (Stormville, N.Y.) and Kayla O'Donovan (Lynbrook, N.Y.), who won the Flight B Backdraw Doubles title as they defeated Saint Peter's Grbelja and Vogel by a score of 8-5 in Macaluso's final collegiate match.
