BUFFALO, N.Y. - Sophomore Kara McHugh (Madison, Conn.) hit the game-winning goal with 21 seconds left in the game to earn Marist its first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) win of the season with a 10-9 rout of Canisius. With the win, the Red Foxes improve to 7-2 overall and 1-0 in the MAAC.

McHugh added one other goal in the contest. Marist was led by junior Emily Leonard (Brookfield, Conn.) with four goals. Senior Jamie Romano (Kings Park, N.Y.), junior Lexi Brannigan (Loudonville, N.Y.), sophomore Allison Gionta (Eastport, N.Y.) and junior Kirsten Viscount (Smithtown, N.Y.) added one goal each. Freshman Natalie Bonaroti (Pittsburgh, Pa.) had the lone assist of the game. Freshman goalkeeper Abigail Witczak (Mendham, N.Y.) had eight saves in the net for Marist.

Canisius opened up scoring to take an early 1-0 lead thanks to a goal by Taylor Giglio. Four consecutive goals by four different Red Foxes pushed Marist ahead 4-1 with 7:25 to go in the first half. Tori Quinn netted her lone goal of the game for the Griffs with 1:45 left in the half to cut Canisius' deficit to two. Brannigan netted one last goal of the half with 18 seconds to play to give Marist a 5-2 lead at half.

Canisius kicked off the second half with three straight goals in less than five minutes to tie the game at five-all with 22:23 left. Back-to-back goals by Leonard put the Red Foxes back on top, 7-5, with 18:23 to go. Marist and Canisius traded goals over the following 10 minutes to result in a 9-7 score with 11:52 to go in favor of the Red Foxes. Two Griffs scored to tie the game 9-9 with 5:43 left to play. With time expiring, McHugh scored an unassisted goal to earn Marist its first conference win of the season and extend the Red Foxes' winning streak to four games.

Marist returns home on Saturday, April 5 against Iona. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at Tenney Stadium. Admission is free and open to the public.
