EDISON, N.J. - Marist water polo freshman Jessica Hamby (Sacramento, Calif.) was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) water polo Rookie of the Week on Tuesday for her efforts in the opening weekend of MAAC play last weekend. The Red Foxes went 2-1, with wins over the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) and defending conference champion Iona.
Hamby was the Red Foxes' greatest offensive threat this past week in the opening week of MAAC games scoring an astounding 12 goals in three games. She scored three goals against Wagner, her lowest scoring game of the weekend, as Marist's comeback came up just short. She also made two steals on defense and drew an ejection. She then found the back of the net four times against preseason favorite Iona as the Red Foxes made an amazing comeback, winning 13-12 in overtime. She had two goals in a four-goal fourth quarter for Marist that saw them erase what was once a five-goal deficit. Then, with the score tied at 12 in the final overtime session, she scored the game-winner with less than 90 seconds left to play. She also drew five ejections versus the Gaels. On Sunday, Hamby capped her weekend, scoring five times against VMI while adding a steal and drawing two ejections.
The is the first weekly award of Hamby's short career and the seventh time this season that a Red Fox has been recognized. Hamby's teammate and twin sister Alison Hamby (Sacramento, Calif.) has twice earned Rookie of the Week honors, including last week. Rebecca Thomas (Cape Town, South Africa) has been named Defensive Player of the Week four times for her efforts in the Marist net and senior Kelly Kline (Reading, Pa.) also earned Defensive Player of the Week honors on Feb. 21.
The Red Foxes (10-17) will continue MAAC play on Saturday against St Francis (N.Y.) and Villanova. The games will be played at St. Francis. They will then play Siena on Sunday at Wagner.
