Women’s Lacrosse Cruises To 19-5 Win Over Iona
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – In a complete game in which the Marist Women’s Lacrosse team allowed six or less goals for the fourth time in 2013, a 6-0 start to the game would be more than enough for the host Red Foxes as they cruised to a 19-5 victory. Ashley Miller (Montville, N.J.) led six Red Foxes, who finished the game with three or more points, as the senior netted a team-high four goals.
Junior Jamie Romano (Kings Park, N.Y.) equaled Miller’s scoring output with three goals and an assist. Senior Amanda Tuck (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) was the third player with a hat trick as she netted three goals.
Defensively, senior goalie Ashley Casiano (South Windsor, Conn.) made eight saves and allowed just four goals in 48:40 minutes of play. Sophomore Christine Astarita (Kennett Square, Pa.) tied with team-highs of two caused turnovers and three ground balls.
The game began slow offensively as the Red Foxes took a 1-0 lead after Romano notched an unassisted marker at 27:05. Nearly eight minutes expired before the next goal was scored at 19:30 by Miller off of a free-position shot.
In the final 10:11 of the first half, the scoring picked up as Marist would score six in comparison to Iona’s two. Consecutive goals by Allison Gionta (Eastport, N.Y.) at 10:11 and 7:58 made it 4-0 before Miller and Tierney Larson (Fairfield, Conn.) closed out Marist’s initial 6-0 run with goals nine seconds apart at 7:07 and 6:58 to open the game. Larson’s goal was of note as Romano won a draw control, darted through the midfield and towards goal before finding her junior classmate for a one-timer shot.
With the score 7-1, Miller finished her hat trick with an unassisted goal with 28 seconds left in the first half.
Ahead 8-2 on the scoreboard at halftime, the Red Foxes also held leads over the Gaels in shots at 23-10, ground balls at 14-7 and clears at 80 percent (8-10) to 62.5 percent (5-8).
In the second period it was more of the same as Marist’s offense and defense thrived against Iona to the tune of 11 goals for and three goals against.
Romano concluded her hat trick at 29:15 to begin the half.
Less than a minute later, Tuck got into the scoring action as she zipped a free-position shot in at 28:28. She would score the next two goals for Marist to finish off her individual hat trick at 18:22.
After assisting on two earlier goals, sophomore Kirsten Viscount (Smithtown, N.Y.) was on the receiving end of an Erin Schroeder (Vero Beach, Fla.) pass at 14:30 for her first marker of the game, as well as the first career assist for Schroeder.
Goals by Miller and Lexi Brannigan (Loudonville, N.Y.) would wrap up Marist’s 4-0 run from 18:22 to 11:20 to put the hosts ahead 15-4.
With the score 15-5, the Red Foxes would close out the action with another 4-0 goal run. Emily Leonard (Brookfield, Conn.), Kara McHugh (Madison, Conn.) Schroeder and Brooke Wickham (Penn Yan, N.Y.) netted the goals for Marist. Of note, Schroeder’s score at 3:45 was assisted by freshman Anna Petrunich (Westborough, Mass.) for her first career point.
For the game, 12 Red Foxes tallied points, while another 10 registered either a ground ball, caused turnover or draw control.
Statistically, Marist outshot Iona 38-23 with a 31-14 advantage in shots on goal. The Red Foxes had more ground balls at 24-16, clears at 14-17 to 10-14 and more caused turnovers at 10-5.
With the win, its sixth in the last seven games, Marist improves to 7-8 on the season and 4-1 in the MAAC.
The Red Foxes will back in action on Saturday, April 20 at home in their annual Senior Day game. This year, the five-athlete class of Ashley Miller, Amanda Tuck, Ashley Casiano, Jessica Irvine and Laura Lucchesi will be recognized before Marist takes on Bucknell at 4 p.m. The game will also be part of the Marist and the Miles of Hope’s Breast Cancer Awareness Weekend.
