POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist women's lacrosse team dropped a hard-fought home opener to Colgate on a cold, wet Tuesday afternoon at Tenney Stadium. After finding themselves in an 8-3 deficit at the half, the Red Foxes came back to outscore the Raiders 9-8 in the second period. Senior Ashley Miller (Montville, N.J.) led the Red Foxes with four goals, while junior Tierney Larson (Fairfield, Conn.) aided the attack with a career-high five points on two goals and three assists.
The Raiders opened the game with a 5-0 run as they looked every bit the team that defeated a strong Vermont team on Saturday, 13-9.
Unfazed, the Red Foxes struck back with a quick 3-0 goal streak from 16:55 to 12:24. Miller started it with an unassisted marker; Larson and sophomore Kirsten Viscount (Smithtown, N.Y.) rounded out the scoring.
With the score 5-3, Colgate closed out the half with three unassisted goals to make it an 8-3 contest.
Though a five-goal game, the statistics showed that the matchup was much closer, as the shots were just 12-11 in favor of the Raiders, while the ground balls were 12-10 for Marist.
The second half would illustrate how close the game actually was as the action would flow from end-to-end.
Marist and Colgate traded goals over the first four minutes of the second half as Lexi Brannigan (Loudonville, N.Y.) scored at 29:29, the Raiders at 27:24 and Viscount registered a marker at 26:37.
Viscount would net her second straight goal 38 seconds later at 25:59 to draw the game within three at 9-6.
Following a Larson goal at 22:59 that made the score 10-7, the action picked up to a hectic pace. In a 3:26 span of play from 19:17 to 15:51 there were seven goals scored, four for Colgate and three for Marist. Miller netted two of the Red Foxes goal, while senior Amanda Tuck (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) had one.
Miller and Tuck's goals at 16:15 and 15:51 were the beginning of a four-goal unanswered run for Marist. At 10:59, Miller took a pass from Larson for her fourth score of the game; at 8:48, freshman Kara McHugh (Madison, Conn.) ripped a free-position shot past Colgate's keeper.
The 4-0 run pulled Marist within two at 14-12.
Unfortunately for the Red Foxes, Colgate would shut them out over the remainder of the game and notch two insurance goals to make the score final at 16-12.
For the game, Marist outshot Colgate 30-27, though the Raiders put 22 of those 27 shots on goal versus 21 for the Red Foxes. Colgate finished with a slight lead in ground balls and clears at, 17-16 and 16-12, respectively.
Colgate's goalie Jennie Berglin, the reigning Patriot League Defender of the Year, made nine saves to bolster the defense.
Of note for Marist: Ashley Miller's four goals gave her six career hat tricks, while Kirsten Viscount's three markers were a career-high and the first hat trick of her career. Tierney Larson's five points are a single-game career high and gives her eight total points on the year, surpassing her sophomore and equaling her entire freshman year outputs.
The Red Foxes (0-2) will next be in action on Saturday, Feb. 23 in Burlington, Vermont where they will take on the Catamounts of the University of Vermont. The opening draw is slated for 1 p.m.
