EASTON, Pa. -- The Marist women's lacrosse team suffered a 12-8 loss at Lafayette in its season opener on Saturday.
Seniors Ashley Miller (Montville, N.J.) and Amanda Tuck (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) each scored two goals. Junior Jamie Romano (Kings Park, N.Y.) had one goal and three assists, while junior Tierney Larson (Fairfield, Conn.) contributed a goal and two assists.
Romano led the way with six draw controls, and Tuck's four ground balls led the Red Foxes.
Sophomore Sabrina Mattera (Wantagh, N.Y.) opened the scoring at the 24:22 mark of the first half on a goal set up by Romano. After Tuck's first goal at the 20:26 mark gave Marist a 2-1 lead, Lafayette took the lead for good on the strength of five straight goals.
The Leopards took a 7-3 halftime lead, and led 12-5 before the Red Foxes closed the gap with three straight goals in a span of 2:17. However, neither team scored in the final four minutes.
For Lafayette, Jessica Rothstein had three goals and an assist, while Cammie Linville also scored three times. Addie Godfrey and Ana White each finished with two goals and two assists.
Marist held a 14-7 edge in draw controls, but Lafayette led in ground balls, 21-12. The Red Foxes led in shots, 22-21.
Marist will return to action on Tuesday, when the Red Foxes face Colgate in their home opener at 3 p.m.
