BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Marist women's lacrosse team fell in its 2012 season opener by a score of 8-5 at Lehigh on Saturday afternoon. After falling behind 6-0 before halftime, the Red Foxes fought furiously to turn the game into a one point contest with five consecutive second half goals. Senior Shannon Haas (Farmingdale, N.Y.) led the Red Foxes with two goals scored.
Marist started off by immediately putting the pressure on the host Mountain Hawks as they snapped off three shots on goal over the first 7:47 of play. Junior Amanda Tuck (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) registered Marist's first shot of the 2012 campaign, though she was denied by Lehigh's First Team All-Patriot League goalie Alex Fitzpatrick.
This was a sign of things to come during the first half as Fitzpatrick denied all six Marist shots on goal to hold the Red Foxes scoreless. On the strength of four points by three-time All- Patriot League honoree Leigh Ann Torcivia and a conversion with one second left in the half, the Mountain Hawks went into the locker room up 6-0.
Coming out after halftime, the Red Foxes kept their confidence up and realized that eventually their shots on goal would find the back of the net. Junior Ashley Miller (Montville, N.J.) was the first Red Fox to break through as she netted the team's first goal of the season with 24:50 left to play. Just over two minutes later at 22:48, took a pass from senior classmate Kelly Condon (Roslyn, Pa.) for goal number two.
The Red Foxes' third consecutive goal came after sophomore Bailey Knapton (Canandaigua, N.Y.) forced a turnover and quickly converted on the offense end at 17:21. Haas netted Marist's fourth goal in the half with a shot past Fitzpatrick at 11:59.
Following a Knapton caused turnover, Marist gained possession with under nine minutes to go and eventually turned that possession into goal number five. Senior Ariel Kramer (Syracuse, N.Y.) was the goal scorer in this occasion as she converted at 7:24.
With Marist streaking back into the contest with five consecutive goals, Lehigh was finally able to break through in the second half with a Kelsey Yenco goal at 4:52 to give the home team a bit more breathing room at 7-5.
A late Mountain Hawk goal made the final score 8-5 in Lehigh's favor.
For the game, each team registered 18 shots, with Marist holding a slight lead in shots on goal at 16 to 14. The Red Foxes caused six turnovers versus five for the Mountain Hawks. Knapton led all players with three personal caused turnovers. Junior goalie Ashley Casiano (South Windsor, Conn.) made six saves in goal for Marist.
The Red Foxes will next be in action on Saturday, February 25 when they travel to UMass for a 1 p.m. contest.
