BUFFALO, N.Y. - Sophomore Allison Gionta (Eastport, N.Y.) notched a game and career-high nine points as the Marist women's lacrosse team (14-3, 7-1 MAAC) defeated Monmouth in the semi-finals of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Tournament, 13-7. The Red Foxes have advanced to the finals for the second consecutive season and will face the winner of tonight's semi-final between Canisius and Fairfield.

Gionta's nine points came by way of three goals and six assists. Senior Jamie Romano (Kings Park, N.Y.) had four goals to pace the Red Foxes. Junior Kirsten Viscount (Smithtown, N.Y.) had two goals and an assist while classmate Erin Schroeder (Vera Beach, Fla.) added two scores. Freshman Natalie Bonaroti (Pittsburgh, Pa.) rounded out the scoring for Marist with one goal. Senior Tierney Larson (Fairfield, Conn.) and sophomore Kara McHugh (Madison, Conn.) dished out one helper each. Freshman goalkeeper Abigail Witczak (Mendham, N.J.) recorded six saves for the Red Foxes. Senior Bailey Knapton (Canandaigua, N.Y.) won a team-high five draw controls and collected four ground balls.

Marist jumped ahead to a 4-0 lead following goals by Gionta, Schroeder, Viscount, and Romano. Monmouth's Stephanie Anderson scored with 4:55 left in the first half to cut the Red Fox lead, 5-1. Romano netted an unassisted goal with 2:59 remaining to give Marist a 5-1 lead at the half.

Romano kicked off the second half with a goal, assisted by Gionta, to increase Marist's lead to 6-1 with 28:47 left in in the second period. Back-to-back goals by Anderson and Allison Stathius pulled the Hawks within three with 26:53 left in the half. Two straight goals by Gionta and Viscount would keep it out of reach for Monmouth as Marist took a five goal lead. Stathius scored to pull the Hawks within four but Viscount netted her second of the evening to increase the lead to five once again. Anderson and Olivia Higson scored consecutive goals for the Hawks but Romano responded with her fourth and final goal of the game as the Red Foxes gained a 10-6 lead with under 10 minutes to play.

Higson netted her second and final goal of the game for Monmouth with 8:39 left in the game to trail Marist 10-7. The Red Foxes held Monmouth scoreless over the final 8:39 and managed to score three more goals before time expired. Marist walked away with a 13-7 victory over Monmouth in the semi-finals.

The game will be aired live on Time Warner Cable and ESPN3 in select areas. The game will be blacked out in New York State where Time Warner Cable is available.
