Women's Lacrosse To Face Undefeated Fairfield In First Place Battle
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist women’s lacrosse team (11-2, 5-0 MAAC) is seeking its ninth straight win as it travels to Fairfield (10-3 5-0 MAAC) on Saturday, April 19. First draw is set for 1 p.m. at Lessing Field. Marist and Farifield are both undefeated in MAAC play, stading at 5-0. With a win, the Red Foxes would claim sole possession of first place in conference standings.
The Red Foxes are on an eight game-winning streak and a perfect 5-0 in conference play. Marist is led by sophomore Allison Gionta (Eastport, N.Y.) with 42 points (30 goals, 12 assists). Senior Jamie Romano (Kings Park, N.Y.) and Junior Kirsten Viscount (Smithtown, N.Y.) have 33 and 31 points respectively.
Last Time Out: Marist clinched a berth in the 2014 MAAC Tournament on April 16 with a win 13-8 rout of Manhattan. Gionta led Marist with seven points, scoring five goals and assisting on two. Sophomore Kara McHugh (Madison, Conn.) dished out a team-high four assists and won seven draw controls. Romano scored three goals and won seven of Marist’s 18 draw controls. Senior Tierney Larson (Fairfield, Conn.) tallied one goal and two assists. Juniors Viscount, Lexi Brannigan (Londonville, N.Y.), Jackie DiMaria (Dix Hills, N.Y.), and Erin Schroeder (Vera Beach, Fla.) scored one goal apiece.
Last Meeting: Romano scored with one second left in the first overtime period giving Marist the 7-6 victory over Fairfield in the semifinal round of the MAAC Championship. Senior Amanda Tuck (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) assisted on the game-winning goal and scored the game’s first goal. Senior Ashley Miller (Montville, N.J.) scored two goals and assisted on one. Viscount scored two second-half goals. Senior Ashley Casiano (South Windsor, Conn.) made 12 saves, including two off of free-positions late in the game.
Scouting the Stags: Fairfield is 10-3 overall and 5-0 in the MAAC. Fairfield has won six straight games after defeating Quinnipiac 18-7. Melanie Raso leads Fairfield with 45 points on 39 goals and 6 assists. Jenna Slowey has 31 points on 25 goals and 6 assists. Riley Hellstein has 25 points on 17 goals and 8 assists. Marist and Fairfield have played four common opponents in conference play this season. Marist defeated Iona 17-6, Niagara 19-7, Quinnipiac 15-13 and Manhattan 13-8. Fairfield defeated the same opponents: Iona 16-4, Niagara 19-7, Quinnipiac 18-7, and Manhattan 12-6.
Following this matchup, the Red Foxes will head upstate to take on Siena on Wednesday April 23. The game is set to begin at 4 p.m.
