POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Brian Giorgis, head coach of the Marist women’s basketball team, is dedicating the 2013-14 season to hunger awareness in the Hudson River Valley. Giorgis will be donating 10 cents for each person who attends a women’s basketball home game this season. The campaign will begin with the season opener on Friday, Nov. 8 against Kentucky. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at McCann Arena.

Matthew Mitchell, the head coach of Kentucky, will match Giorgis’ donation in the season opener. Proceeds from the 50/50 raffle will benefit hunger awareness in the Hudson Valley. Raffle tickets cost will be one for $1, seven for $5, and 15 for $10.

“Hunger month has always been something that’s very near and dear to my heart here at Marist,” said Giorgis. “I like to donate to different charitable organizations. One year I saw a coach donate a dime for each person in attendance at home games to hunger, and I thought this would be great for helping Campus Ministry with raising funds for what they do for Thanksgiving and the community. Knowing the hunger statistics for Dutchess County, it’s something that I wanted to do.”
