JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Marist baseball team swept Saint Peter’s in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) doubleheader on Saturday at Jaroschak Field. The Red Foxes prevailed 15-3 in game one, and 11-3 in the seven-inning second game.

On the day, Marist totaled 26 runs, 34 hits, two complete games and zero errors. Sophomore left fielder Steve Laurino (Carle Place, N.Y.) paced Marist offensively on the day by going 7-for-10 with six RBIs and two runs scored.

Here is a closer look at both games:

Game One: Marist 15, Saint Peter’s 3

The Red Foxes had 19 hits, drew 11 walks and scored in eight different innings, including a five-run outburst in the sixth.

Laurino went 4-for-6 with four RBIs, a run scored and two doubles. Six other Red Foxes had two-hit games: freshman center fielder Graham McIntire (Concord, N.H.), senior shortstop Zach Shank (Lititz, Pa.), senior first baseman Mike Orefice (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.), junior third baseman Nick McQuail (Wantagh, N.Y.), junior designated hitter Zachary Passerelle (Sparta, N.J.) and freshman second baseman Joey Aiola (Suffern, N.Y.). Sophomore outfielder Dan Ventricelli (Woodbury, N.Y.) had his first career hit in the ninth.

Marist scored 11 runs with two outs.

Senior right-hander Chris Bielak (Sayreville, N.Y.) struck out nine as he improved to 6-2 and pitched his first complete game of his career. Eric Mozeika (1-4), who went the first 3.1, took the loss for Saint Peter’s. Center fielder Matt Mancini went 2-for-4 for the Peacocks.

Game Two: Marist 11, Saint Peter’s 3

Marist scored in five of the seven innings, jumping out to a 6-1 lead after two. After Saint Peter’s scored twice in the third, the Red Foxes pulled away with one in the fourth, two in the sixth and two in the seventh.

The Red Foxes outhit the Peacocks, 15-9. Laurino and freshman center fielder Matt Pagano (Cranston, R.I.) each went 3-for-4. McQuail, Passerelle and Aiola all had two hits apiece, with McQuail adding three RBIs. Orefice scored three runs.

Senior right-hander Brett Houseal (Landisville, Pa.) improved to 7-5 with his complete game win. Houseal scattered nine hits, walked no one and struck out three in his fifth coast-to-coast effort of the year.

Saint Peter’s starter Mathew Yuhas (5-5), who went five innings, took the loss. Catcher James Smith paced the Peacocks offensively by belting a solo home run and driving in two runs.

Marist improved to 24-19-1 overall and 14-6 in the MAAC; Saint Peter’s is now 14-29 overall and 7-10 in the MAAC. The teams will conclude their three-game series on Sunday with a single game at noon. A win would clinch the Red Foxes’ berth in the 2013 MAAC Baseball Championships.
