JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - The Marist baseball team defeated East Tennessee State 13-2 in the finale of a three-game series on Sunday. The Red Foxes pounded out 17 hits, five of which went for extra bases.

Five Red Foxes enjoyed multi-hit games. Sophomore designated hitter Alec Petrone (Mahopac, N.Y.), senior shortstop Zach Shank (Lititz, Pa.) and freshman center fielder Matt Pagano (Cranston, R.I.) had three hits apiece. Pagano drove in three runs, belted his first collegiate homer and stole a bases. Senior first baseman Mike Orefice (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) and junior second baseman Nick McQuail (Wantagh, N.Y.) each had two hits. Orefice had four RBIs, giving him nine in the last two games. Both of McQuail's hits were doubles.

On the mound, senior right-hander Brett Houseal (Landisville, Pa.) earned his first victory of the season with 7.1 solid innings. Houseal (1-2) gave up seven hits and two walks while striking out four and allowing just two runs. Freshman right-hander Erik Bauer (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) got the final two outs of the eighth in his first collegiate appearance, and junior left-hander Jordan Eich (Spencerport, N.Y.) closed the game with a scoreless ninth.

The Red Foxes' offensive outburst was fueled by three big innings, as they scored three runs in the second, five in the third and five in the fifth. Orefice had a two-run single in the third, and a two-run double in the fourth. In the fifth, the big blow was a three-run homer by Pagano.

Marist did not commit an error defensively, and turned two double plays.

East Tennessee State starter Jimmy Nesselt (1-1), who went the first three innings, took the loss. Left fielder Dylan Tritsch and shortstop Chris Riopedre led the Buccaneers offensively with two hits apiece.

Marist improved to 3-4 on the season; East Tennessee State fell to 8-3. The Red Foxes return to action next weekend with a three-game series at UNC Greensboro. The teams will play single games on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
