ELON, N.C. - The Marist baseball team defeated Boston College of the Atlantic Coast Conference by a score of 9-3 on Sunday in the final game of the Country Inn & Suites Invitational.
The Red Foxes' 3-4-5 hitters combined to go 10-for-12 with seven runs batted in and six runs scored. Senior shortstop Zach Shank (Lititz, Pa.) went 5-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI. Senior first baseman Mike Orefice (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Junior third baseman Nick McQuail (Wantagh, N.Y.) went 2-for-4 with four RBIs and a run scored.
Senior right-hander Chris Bielak (Sayreville, N.J.) earned the win on the mound with five scoreless innings of relief. Bielak (1-0) surrendered just two hits and struck out two. He relieved junior starter Kevin McCarthy (Malverne, N.Y.), who allowed two earned runs over the first four innings.
McQuail got Marist on the scoreboard with a sacrifice fly in the top of the first inning. In the third, the Red Foxes went up 4-0 on an RBI single by Orefice and a two-run homer by McQuail. Boston College then closed the gap with a single run in the third and two in the fourth, but Marist scored twice in the fifth on an RBI single by McQuail and a squeeze bunt by graduate left fielder Eric Helmrich (Yonkers, N.Y.).
In the seventh, Shank led off with an infield single, and scored from first on a double by Orefice. The Red Foxes then tacked on two more runs in the eighth.
Nick Poore (0-1), who started and went the first three innings, took the loss. Second baseman Gabriel Hernandez went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI for the Eagles.
Marist (1-1) outhit Boston College (1-2) by a 12-5 margin.
The Red Foxes will return to action next weekend with a three-game series at Charleston Southern. The teams will play single games on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
