Marist Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Old Dominion
NORFOLK, Va. - The Marist baseball team split a doubleheader with Old Dominion on Friday. The Red Foxes took the first game 7-2, but fell in the nightcap 6-3.
In game one, red-shirt senior Chad Gallagher (Southboro, Mass.) pitched six strong innings to earn the victory. Offensively, freshman catcher Mark Brennan (Wallingford, Conn.) had a bases-clearing double in the second inning, while junior shortstop Zach Shank (Lititz, Pa.) iced the victory with a two-run shot in the ninth.
Brennan's three-run double came with two outs in the second, and got the Red Foxes on the scoreboard. After Old Dominion scored twice in the third, Marist added a run in the sixth on an RBI double by red-shirt sophomore Mark Stuckey (Marietta, Pa.), and another run in the eighth on an RBI groundout by Stuckey. Shank's two-run homer in the ninth provided the final margin. Senior designated hitter Eric Helmrich (Yonkers, N.Y.) went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored.
Gallagher scattered seven hits and allowed just one earned run in his six innings, as he ran his record to 1-1. He struck out five and walked two. The Red Foxes then received a combined three innings of scoreless relief from freshman right-hander Evan Davis (Little Falls, N.Y.), sophomore left-hander Jordan Eich (Spencerport, N.Y.) and senior right-hander Jake Rifkin (West Deptford, N.J.).
In the second game, Marist took a 3-2 lead into the eighth, but Old Dominion scored four runs in its half of the frame. Sophomore right-hander Brett Houseal (Millersville, Pa.) was charged with five runs (four earned) in seven-plus innings and took the loss. Junior first baseman Mike Orefice (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) and sophomore left fielder Jake Berry (South Hamilton, Mass.) had two hits apiece for Marist, and red-shirt junior catcher Ben Luderer (River Vale, N.J.) had a two-run single in the second. Berry added an RBI single in the third.
Marist (2-3) and Old Dominion will play the final game of their three-game set on Sunday at 1 p.m.
