Baseball Loses To Toledo In Final Game Of Chanticleer Classic
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Marist baseball team was defeated by Toledo 9-3 in its final game of the Chanticleer Classic on Sunday. Junior first baseman Mike Orefice (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI for the Red Foxes.
Orefice has now hit safely in all eight of the Red Foxes' games this season, and has at least two hits in each of the last four games as he raised his average to .471. Sophomore center fielder Jake Berry (South Hamilton, Mass.) was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, and freshman designated hitter Mark Swertfager (Katonah, N.Y.) had his first two career hits as went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Marist scored first in the top of the first as Berry led off with a single, and came around to score on an RBI groundout by Orefice. Toledo then scored twice in its half of the first, but the Red Foxes tied the game in the top of the third. Berry reached on a one-out infield single, and scored on a single by junior shortstop Zach Shank (Lititz, Pa.). However, Toledo broke the game open with four runs in its half of the fourth.
The Red Foxes scored once in the sixth as Orefice singled, and scored on a two-out single by Swertfager. Toledo added an insurance run in the eighth.
Marist starter Brett Houseal (Landisville, Pa.) took the loss for the Red Foxes, as he went three-plus innings. Houseal is now 0-2 this season. Junior lefty Dan Zlotnick (Katonah, N.Y.) pitched 3.1 scoreless innings of relief.
Toledo starter Jared Locke went the first six innings to earn the victory. The Rockets were paced offensively by leadoff hitter Joe Corfman, who went 2-for-4 with four runs scored, and designated hitter Jeff Cola went 3-for-4 with two RBIs.Marist is now 3-5 this season; Toledo is 5-9. The Red Foxes will return to action with a two-game series at 2011 College World Series participant Virginia on Tuesday and Wednesday.
