NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - The Marist baseball team recorded a doubleheader sweep against Iona in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday at Salesian High School. The Red Foxes recorded a 6-2 win in game one, and a 7-2 triumph in the seven-inning second game.

In game one, red-shirt senior lefty Chad Gallagher (Southboro, Mass.) earned the 20th win in his Marist career. Gallagher went eight innings and scattered eight hits. He walked just two, and struck out nine. One of the two runs he permitted was unearned. Sophomore right-hander Kevin McCarthy (Malverne, N.Y.) finished the game with a 1-2-3 ninth, which included two strikeouts. Junior right-hander Brett Houseal (Landisville, Pa.) then tossed his second straight seven-inning complete game in game two. He scattered seven hits, struck out two and also walked no one for the second straight week.

Offensively for the Red Foxes, junior first baseman Mike Orefice (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) homered in both games.

In game one, a two-run double by sophomore third baseman Nick McQuail (Wantagh, N.Y.) opened the scoring. The Red Foxes expanded their lead to 3-0 in the fourth on a solo homer by sophomore right fielder Pat Welsh (Millersville, Pa.). Marist then scored three in the eighth on a two-run homer by Orefice and an RBI single by Welsh. Junior shortstop Zach Shank (Lititz, Pa.) finished game one 3-for-5 with two runs scored for the Red Foxes.

Iona scored single runs in the seventh and eighth. Second baseman Eric Capowski went 3-for-4 for the Gaels.

In game two, Marist once again struck first in the first inning. After a leadoff single by sophomore outfielder Jake Berry (South Hamilton, Mass.), Orefice belted a two-run homer with out to give the Red Foxes a 2-0 lead. After a run on an error made the score 3-0 in the fourth, the Red Foxes pushed across three in the fifth. The big blows in that inning were consecutive doubles by Orefice and senior left fielder Eric Helmrich (Yonkers, N.Y.) to start the inning, and an RBI single by Welsh.

An RBI double by first baseman Mike Chiaravalloti and and RBI single by right fielder Colin Lyall cut Iona' deficit to 6-2 in the sixth. Marist closed out the scoring in the seventh as Welsh drew a two-out walk, stole second, and scored on an RBI double by freshman catcher Mark Swertfager (Katonah, N.Y.).

Marist, which has won five straight, is now 18-20 overall and 9-7 in the MAAC. Iona fell to 15-27 overall and 5-9 in the MAAC. The teams will wrap up their three-game series with a single game on Sunday at noon.
