POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) named junior Mackenzie Stephens (Holland, Mich.) Player of the Week and junior Brooke Zywick (Garden City, Mich.) Libero of the Week.
Stephens posted 26 kills to become the fifth all-time for Marist in single match kills in Marist’s win over Rider on Sunday. In the Red Foxes’ victory over Saint Peter’s on Saturday, Stephens led the team in kills with 13 and also had five blocking assists. She posted a .571 attack percentage, while posting 15.5 points in the match. For the weekend, Stephens went 39-4-67 for a .536 attack percentage, while also claiming 41 points between both matches.
Stephens is second in the MAAC in hitting percentage, going 227-57-501 (.339 attack percentage). She is also third in kills (227, 3.39 per set), third in points (262.0, 3.91 per set) and sixth in blocks (64, .96 per set).
At the start of the first set, in the Red Foxes’ win over Rider, Zywick broke the Marist record for the most digs in a single season. Zywick entered the match tied with 480, set by Emily Brosky in 2009. In the fourth match, Zywick posted her 20th dig for the day, to claim her 500th season dig. With 31 for the match, she now has 511 digs this season. Zywick also had a team high 15 digs in Marist’s sweep over Saint Peter’s on Saturday.
Earlier in the week, she was also was named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA)/Capital One Academic All-District Team. Zywick is part of an overall outstanding effort from Marist’s volleyball team that has been the recipient of numerous recent academic achievements. Last June, the team earned its second consecutive NCAA Public Recognition Award for its Academic Progress Rate (APR) score. In August, the team earned a seventh consecutive American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) team academic award (all under head coach Tom Hanna). Zywick is ninth Marist volleyball player to be named Academic All-District in the last six years.
Marist is set to compete as the second seed in the MAAC Tournament this weekend. The Red Foxes will take on No. 3 seed Iona on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Alumni Recreation Center on the campus of Siena College. The championship game will take place Sunday, Nov. 24 at 1 p.m. All three games of the tournament will be featured on MAAC.TV.
