Volleyball Falls To Fairfield, 3-1
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist volleyball team fell in a tough 3-1 (23-25, 25-17, 18-25, 18-25) decision versus Fairfield on Saturday afternoon in a Metro Atlantic Athletics Conference (MAAC) match. The Red Foxes move to 6-3 in MAAC play.
Junior Mackenzie Stephens (Holland, Mich.) and sophomore Kelsey Lahey (Bowling Green, Ohio) led the Marist offense with 14 kills a piece. Sophomore Courtney Shaw (Centennial, Co.) had eight kills and two solo blocks. Junior Marisa Gilbert (Pflugerville, Texas) had five kills and four total blocks. Senior Audra Brady (Allentown, Pa.) had 40 assists to go along with 15 digs, four kills and three total blocks. Junior Brooke Zywick (Garden City, Mich.) led the Marist defense with 19 digs while junior Becca Jones (Arlington, Va.) contributed 14 digs.
The first set was a close back and forth game. The teams were tied up 5-5 when Fairfield went on a run that brought them to a 17-7 lead. Marist fought back, after a big kill from Stevens Marist went on a 12-2 run. Lahey had three kills during the run that brought the Red Foxes back 19-19. After a kill by Shaw and a service ace from Brady, Marist was up 22-20, but the Stags fought back to make the score 23-23. After two errors by the Red Foxes, they fell 23-25 in the first set.
The second set was close, tied 13-13, until the end when Marist took over and dominated the rest of the set. Another big kill by Lahey got the Red Foxes going, helped by a few errors by Fairfield. A crucial kill by Gilbert gave Marist a 17-14 lead that it would not give up. Kills by Jones and Stephens, and a service ace by Millington gave the Red Foxes the victory in set two, 25-17.
The third set started out just as close as the second, tied 10-10 in the middle of the set. Marist went on a 5-0 run lead by two kills by Lahey, and one by Gilbert. Fairfield fought back to tie it up 16-16 and from there the Stags would lead the rest of the set, going on a 3-0 run followed by the 5-0 run that would win it for them, 25-18.
During the fourth set, Fairfield jumped out to an early lead, leading the Red Foxes 14-7. The Red Foxes went on a 2-0 run off two kills, one by Stephens and one by Gilbert. Towards the end of the set, Marist went on a 3-0 run, led by a kill by Gilbert and a service ace by Brady. The run proved to be short as the Red Foxes lost the fourth set, 25-18.
The Marist volleyball team remains home to face Quinnipiac on Sunday, Oct. 20. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m. in McCann Arena. Admission is free and open to the public.
