Women's Tennis Completes Day 1 of Marist Invitational
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - In the first day of the Marist Invitational, the women's tennis was quite successful as Red Fox athletes compiled 10 victories in singles competition and two in the doubles draw. Sophomore Marielle Campbell and freshmen Sabrina Tahir, Kirsten Ackerman and Tessa Lewis led the way, as each won two singles matches.
Competing in Flight B, Campbell defeated Siena's Jessica Macaluso 6-2, 4-6, 10-4 and Albany's Sarah Iannone in straight sets 6-0, 6-4.
Tahir is the other Red Fox who has reached the Flight B semifinals. She defeated Siena's Brittany Filip 6-2, 6-1 in the first round and Linnea Enoh-Janssen of Saint Peter's in the quarterfinals 6-4, 6-1.
In Flight C action, Ackerman dropped just five games as she swept Hartford's Jessica Galik 6-0, 6-2 and Albany's Aubrey Brook 6-2, 6-1. Senior Kayla O'Donovan advanced to the semifinals as well, as she defeated Vanessa Vogel of Saint Peter's 6-4, 6-3.
Lewis is in the semifinals of Flight D as she bested Saint Peter's Angie Garma 6-0, 6-4 and Hartford's Emily Willhoft 6-2, 6-2.
In doubles action, the teams of Erin McCarthy and Joana Sun, and Sabrina Tahir and Marielle Campbell each secured victories. McCarthy/Sun over Hartford's Liu/Zampas 8-3 and Tahir/Campbell over Siena's Holloway/Braz 8-2.
Semifinal and championship action in both singles and doubles will be held tomorrow at the East Campus Tennis Pavilion.
