Tennis Competes At Eastern Tennis Championships

WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Marist women's tennis team participated in the three day Eastern Tennis Championships on the campus of the United States Military Academy this weekend. One of twenty teams competing in matches, the Red Foxes were led by victories by junior Joana Sun (Gales Ferry, Conn.) and freshman Sabrina Tahir (Yonkers, N.Y.) in the championship draws.

Playing the in B Singles draw, Sun won a hard fought opening match versus Long Island University's Taysha Blessington. After splitting the first two sets 6-2, 0-6, the two players competed in a back and forth tie-breaker that went to a final score of 19-17. In her second match, Sun faced off with UMass' Julia Comas in the Round of 16. The junior battled throughout, but fell by a score of 8-4.

Tahir was the other Red Fox, who earned a victory in the championship draw. The freshman playing in the D Singles draw defeated Sarah Tremaine of Fordham in straight sets 6-2, 6-1. In the Round of 16, Tahir fell to UMass' Jocelyn Providence 8-3.

In consolation action, Sun, senior Erin McCarthy (Salem, N.J.) and sophomore Marielle Campbell (Patterson, N.Y.) picked up additional victories for Marist. Sun earned a win over URI's Kirsten Leikem by a score of 8-2 before eventually falling to Kate Winingham of Bowdoin, 8-1 in the ensuing round of the Honors draw. The Honors bracket consisted of players, who went 1-1 in the draw A and B competitions.

McCarthy and Campbell both competed in the Courage bracket amongst players, who fell in their initial two matches. In a matchup versus Army's Morgen Kiser, McCarthy dominated and won 8-1. She fell to UMass' Yuliana Motyl in the following round by a score of 8-3. Campbell faced off with Hofstra's Brooke Sailer and downed her opponent 8-3. In the semifinals of the Courage bracket, Campbell was defeated by the eventual draw winner Maxie Weinberg of UConn 8-2.

The Red Foxes will be off from competition next weekend before hosting the two-day Marist Invitational on Oct. 8 and Oct. 9.
