SARATOGA, N.Y. - The Marist men's and women's crew teams competed on Saturday in the Head of the Fish regatta. The day consisted of a several different events, that saw the Red Foxes having success in both individual and team races.

Men's team captain, Andrew Sayles began the day finishing third in the Varsity Singles. The men's Varsity Eight finished 2nd of 15. The men's second Varsity Eight finished 4th of 11. The men's Novice Eight's finished 2nd and 15th out of 26.

"It was great to see the men's varsity Eight rebound from a less than satisfactory finish last week at the Charles and race very well today," Director of Rowing Tom Sanford said. "They really went after it and displayed what they can do if they execute their race plan."

The women's Varsity Eight finished 10th of 17 while the second Varsity Eight finished 9 of 14. The women's Varsity 4 finished 2nd, 7th and 18th of 28. The women's Novice Eight's finished 1st and 10th of 24, winning the coveted "Fish Head Trophy" for winning their event.

"We will learn from this race and work to take better advantage of each racing opportunity in the future," Sanford said. "Having learned a little from the Eight race in the morning, the varsity women raced much better in their 4's event in the afternoon. Each of the three 4's handled the conditions better and raced with more aggression."

The real highlights of the day were the men's and women's Novice Eight results. They were exceptional and handled the tough conditions very well. A majority of the athletes in these events were at their first race ever. The results reflect the amount of work, energy and leadership provided by their coaches. Matt Lavin, Michelle Stathers and Rick Lambert have developed these novices to the point where they were able to make a statement at this regatta. Although this was just a taste of racing for these athletes, they now know that if they stick together and work hard through the remainder of the fall and winter training, they have the potential to have a very successful spring season and provide the depth necessary to produce fast varsity crews throughout their varsity rowing careers."
