WHITNEY POINT, N.Y. - The Novice Eight boats for both the men's and women's crew teams captured titles on Sunday at the New York State Collegiate Championships this past weekend.
After finishing second in their heat on Saturday, the women's Novice Eight improved their time by more than three seconds on Sunday to beat the boat from Ithaca by a mere 1.5 seconds with a time of 7:19.20.
The men's Novice Eight also improved their time from Saturday to Sunday. They easily won their heat by a full 13 seconds before racing to a time of 6:22.70 in the finals to defeat St. Lawrence by five seconds.
The Varsity Eight squads for both the men and women finished second in their finals. The women improved their heat time by two seconds, finishing their finals race in 6:50.24, six seconds by William Smith. The men's boat also bettered their heat time by more than five seconds, finishing behind only Ithaca in the finals with a time of 6:01.74.
The Varsity Four A boat on the men's side also finished second in their race, clocking in at 7:00.73 in the finals, behind only the squad from Rochester.
Both programs are back in the water this weekend, though in different locations. The men will compete in the ECAC Championships in Worcester, Mass. on Friday. The women will conclude their schedule as they travel to Philadelphia for the Dad Vail Regatta on Friday and Saturday.
