Marist Women’s Soccer Falls To Iona On Senior Night, 3-0
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – In its last regular season game of the 2013 season, Marist women’s soccer fell to Iona, 3-0. The Red Foxes finished with a 6-4 record in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play. Junior goalkeeper Andrea Wicks (East Northport, N.Y.) recorded two saves in net for Marist.
Despite Marist outshooting Iona 7-4 in the first period, the Gaels led 2-0 heading into halftime. Erika Flowers scored the first goal for Iona at the 4:46 mark. Melissa Frederick passed to the middle of the box from the right side of the field and connected with Flowers. Flowers shot to the left side of the net, deflecting the shot off the post and ricocheted into the back of the net.
Later in the half, at the 35:55 mark, a pass from Flowers to Christina Tesoriero resulted in an Iona 2-0 lead. Flowers passed up field from the end line to Tesoriero at the top of the box. She ripped a shot to the lower left corner to give the Gaels a 2-0 advantage heading into the half.
Iona scored its third and final goal of the night in the 73rd minute. Safi Ayinde made a short pass to Sofia Sanchez at the top of the box. Sanchez took two touches before scoring in the lower left corner past a diving Wicks. The Gales had a 3-0 edge with less than 20 minutes remaining in regulation. Marist outshot Iona 8-2 in the second half but we unable to convert past Gaels’ goalkeeper Trista Rivera as the score went final.
Marist seniors Alycia Cartica (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.), Rycke Guiney (Naperville, Ill.), Kylee McIntosh (Cheshire, Conn.), Maria Moreno (Oyster Bay, N.Y.), Samantha Pace (Kearny, N.J.) and Samantha Panzner (Livingston, N.J.) were honored prior to the game for their accomplishments and commitment to the program.
Marist finished the 2013 regular season 8-9-2 and 6-4 in MAAC play. The Red Foxes head to ESPN Worldwide Sports at Disney in Orlando, Florida for the 2013 MAAC women’s soccer championships.
