POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist football program will have four captains for the 2012 season: linebacker Mike Hagemann (Vernon, N.J.), safety Nick Mainiero (Croton, N.Y.), safety Tyler Ramsey (Southbridge, Mass.), and quarterback Chuckie Looney (Ocala, Fla.). Hagemann, Mainiero, and Ramsey will be heading into their senior years, while Looney is a rising junior.
"We're confident that these guys will provide great leadership for us this season," Head Coach Jim Parady said. "We'll look for them to set a good example for us on and off the field."
Hagemann started all 11 games at defensive end for the Red Foxes in 2010, and then made the transition to linebacker last season. He started all eight games he appeared in last year, and had 33 tackles, two pass break-ups, and one sack. Hagemann was selected to the Pioneer Football League (PFL) Academic Honor Roll in 2010.
Mainiero is coming off a season in which he was named Honorable Mention All-PFL. He started all 11 games at safety, recording 53 tackles while finishing second on the team with four pass break-ups. Mainiero has appeared in all 22 of Marist's games the last two seasons, while making 18 starts in that span.
Ramsey also started all 11 games at safety last season, and was third on the team with six-and-a-half tackles for losses while registering 53 total stops on the season. He has been selected to the PFL Academic Honor Roll in all three of his previous seasons at Marist, and was named to the PFL All-Academic Second Team each of the last two seasons. He was an Honorable Mention All-PFL selection as a linebacker in 2010.
Looney is only the second true junior to be named a team captain in Parady's 21 seasons as head coach, following the selection of Rory Foley in 2009. He was also the first true freshman to see action at quarterback in Parady's tenure in 2010. In his career, Looney has appeared in 12 games, and started the first three games of last season. He has thrown 11 career touchdown passes.
The Marist football team opens the 2012 season on Saturday, Sept. 1 at Bryant. The Red Foxes will play the first of their five home games on Saturday, Sept. 8 against Bucknell. The team is in its fourth season as a member of the PFL, and will open league play on Saturday, Sept. 22 against Davidson, which will take place on Alumni Weekend.
