Last Time Out: Marist topped Canisius 13-7 to secure its No. 2 seed for the MAAC Tournament. Freshman J.D. Recor (Lancaster, N.Y.) led the Marist attack once again with six points on three goals and three assists. Junior Colin Joka (Conshohocken, Pa.) had a game-high four goals. Sophomore Joseph Radin (Long Beach, N.Y.) netted three goals while juniors Mike Begley (Brookeville, Md.), Drew Nesmith (Montclair, N.J.) and sophomore Nick Kilkowski (Summit, N.J.) added one goal each. Begley and sophomore Dominic Montemurro (Kings Park, N.Y.) dished out one assist apiece.

Montemurro won 10-of-20 face-offs for Marist. Junior goalkeeper Dave Scarcello (Buffalo, N.Y.) had a shut-down performance in the net with four saves, allowing just one goal in the first half. Scarcello also had a team-high four ground balls alongside Begley.

Last Meeting: Detroit edged Marist, 12-11. Begley and Joka each had a hat trick to lead the Red Foxes. Montemurro won 20-of-26 face-offs. Montemurro, Recor, freshman Connor O’Neill (Sayville, N.Y.), Nesmith and senior Gannon Osborn (Canandaigua, N.Y.) contributed one goal each. Radin and Recor dished out two assists each. Scarcello made eight saves in the net for Marist. Osborn collected a game-high six ground balls and junior Patrick Eaker (Redding, Conn.) caused a game-high four turnovers.

Underclassmen Lead Up Top: Recor leads Marist with 44 points on 15 goals and a team-high 29 assists. Recor's 29 assists are best for ninth nationally, first among all freshmen in the country, and second in the MAAC. His 29 assists also break Recor into the top ten in program history for assists in a single season. Recor has nabbed four MAAC Rookie of the Week honors this season. Radin, the reigning 2013 MAAC Rookie of the Year, has recorded 41 points this season on a team-high 34 goals and seven assists. Radin ranks 20th nationally and second in the MAAC for goals per game (2.62).

Junior Class Trinity: A trio of juniors – Begley, Joka, and Nesmith – round out the top five for Marist, all posting 30+ points. On attack, Joka has 35 points on 31 goals and four assists. He ranks 30th nationally and third in the MAAC for goals per game (2.38) and 14th in the nation and second in the conference for shot percentage (45.6). Midfielders Nesmith (28g, 3a) and Begley (19g, 11a) have posted 31 and 30 points respectively.

Eaker Picks Up: Long-stick midfielder Eaker finished the regular season with 42 ground balls, a new season-high for the junior and currently ranking second on the team (16 in 2012 and 38 in 2013). He also has a team-high 12 caused-turnovers. Eaker’s 42 ground balls places him sixth in the MAAC and he finishes eighth in conference for caused-turnovers.

Dom Is Dominant At The X: Montemurro has won 173-312 face-offs this season for the Red Foxes, posting a winning-percentage of 55.4 percent. His winning-percentage ranks 24th nationally and third in the MAAC. Montemurro has picked up a team-high 66 ground balls this season, ranking 38th nationally and fifth in the MAAC.

Scarcello Secures The Net: Scarcello has started 11-of-13 goals in the net for Marist, posting a save-percentage of 48.1 percent. He has allowed 135 goals this season for a goals-against average of 11.74. Dave Scarello has made 125 saves this year. He ranks sixth in the MAAC in both save percentage and saves per game.

Joka Is No Joke: In Marist’s season-opener against Stony Brook, Joka scored a career-high seven goals, tying for third in program history for goals in a single game. This is the first time since 2001 a Red Fox scored seven goals in a game.

Nesmith Flourishes Against Ranked Opponents: Marist faced two ranked opponents this season: #5 Denver and #16 Hofstra. The Red Foxes fell to Denver in their second game of the year, 15-9. Nesmith had three goals to lead the Red Foxes alongside a game-high six ground balls. Later in the season against Hofstra, Nesmith netted a career-high six goals on eight shots in Marist’s 15-10 loss.

Clearing Their Way To The Top: The Red Foxes lead the nation and the MAAC in clearing percentage, clearing 92.8 percent of the time (180-194).

Tournament Tiebreaker: Marist closed out the year 5-8 overall and 3-3 in the MAAC. The Titans finished the regular season at 6-7 and 3-3 in the MAAC. Both teams were a part of a five-way tie for second place. Since the mini-conference record among all teams was the same, it came down to goal differential with Marist (+9) getting the second seed, Detroit (+1) the third and Canisius (-2) the fourth and Quinnipiac (-2) and Manhattan (-6) on the outside looking in. The Griffs got in over Quinnipiac by beating the Bobcats during the regular season.

Falling By One: All three conference games the Red Foxes lost this year were by one goal. Marist fell to conference rival, Siena, 9-8, to open up MAAC play. The Red Foxes then lost to Manhattan at home despite a riveting comeback, 14-13. Its final MAAC loss of the year came against Detroit as Marist dropped a 12-11 decision.

Too Many Close Calls: In Marist’s eight losses this season, five have been by three or less goals and three have been by just one goal. All three one-goal losses were against MAAC opponents. In the three losses by more than three goals, two were against ranked opponents.

Titans Pose Thrilling Match-Up: Five of the seven career meetings between Marist and Detroit have been decided by just one goal. The Red Foxes and Titans have met twice in the MAAC semi-finals, both of which were tied in the fourth quarter. Top-seeded Marist fell to No. 4 Detroit in the 2013 semi-finals, 7-6. In 2011, the Red Foxes received the second seed and fell to No. 3 Detroit, 9-8.

Decade of MAAC Tournament History: This is the fifth straight year the Marist men’s lacrosse team has made it into the MAAC Tournament. In the past four seasons, the Red Foxes have fell to either Detroit or Siena in the semi-finals. In the past decade, the only year Marist won in the semi-finals was in 2005. The Red Foxes went on to claim the MAAC Championship title over Mount St. Mary’s, 10-6, and make its first ever trip to the NCAA Tournament. Marist fell to top-seeded Johns Hopkins, 22-6.

Deja Vu: In 2011, Marist was the No. 2 seed and faced No. 3 Detroit in the semi-finals of the MAAC Tournament, hosted in Buffalo, N.Y. With the game tied 8-8 at the start of the fourth quarter, Detroit won the opening face-off and quickly converted it to a goal 13 seconds into the period. The Titans were able to shut down the Red Foxes for the remainder of the fourth to walk away with a 9-8 victory.

Time For Retribution: In 2013, the Titans received the final spot in the MAAC Tournament and faced top-seeded Marist in the semi-finals, hosted in Buffalo, N.Y. Detroit upset Marist, 7-6, despite the Red Foxes claiming an 11-8 victory during regular season play. Radin led Marist with two goals while Mike Birney had three goals to pace the Titans.

Finishing Strong: The Red Foxes finished regular season play with two MAAC wins over Monmouth and Canisius. Marist defeated the Griffs by six goals, the most it defeated any opponent by this season. The Red Foxes also held Canisius to just one goal in the opening 30 minutes of play to post an 8-1 lead at the half. One goal is the fewest number of goals allowed in one half of play by Marist all season.

Scouting Detroit: Detroit finished the regular season 6-7 overall and 3-3 in the MAAC. Shayne Adams leads the Titans with 43 points on 36 goals and seven assists. Alex Maini is second on the team with 41 points on 18 goals and a team-high 23 assists. Tom Masterson (14g, 20a), Scott Drummond (16g, 15a), Mike Birney (17g, 7a), and Brandon Beauregard (10g, 12a) all finished the regular season with 20+ points.

Freshman goalkeeper Jason Weber tops Division I in save percentage and saves per game. Weber – who has started 10-straight games and has posted at least 12 saves in each contest – leads Division I goalies with a .647 save percentage and 16.30 saves per game, and is tops in the MAAC and 15th in the country with an 8.87 goals against average - all school records. On the year, Weber has made 163 saves – including 100 in league play – which ranks second in Titan history, just 16 shy of 179 A.J. Levell had in 2011. He has four games on the year with 18 or more saves and his school record 23 saves against Marist on April 5 is still the most in the NCAA this year.

The Titans have taken advantage of penalties so far scoring on 32-of-46 (69.6%) extra-man opportunities - including 12-of-16 (75.0%) in MAAC play. The 69.6% is first in the nation and is currently shattering the all-time NCAA record of 58.6% (41-of-70) set by North Carolina in 1985. As a team, Detroit still leads the nation in man-up scoring at .696, while also leading the country with 16.08 saves per game.

Road To The 2013 MAAC Championship: The Titans won the 2013 MAAC Championship title as the No. 4 seed. Detroit defeated top-seeded Marist in the semi-finals, 7-6. Mike Birney led the Titans with three goals. Andy Hebden, Jordan Houtby, Ryan Callaghan, and Tom Masterson each notched one goal. Scott Drummond led Detroit with three assists while Alex Wilson, Alex Maini and Brandon Beauregard dished out one assist apiece.

Detroit went on to top No. 3 Siena in the finals, 11-10 in overtime. Mike Birney spearheaded the attack for the Titans with five goals. Alex Maini and Scott Drummond had two goals each while Thomas Sible and Tom Masterson added one each. Tom Masterson dished out three helpers while Alex Maini and Brandon Beauregard contributed one each.

In the first round of the NCAA Tournament, the Titans faced No. 2 Notre Dame and fell 9-7. Brandon Beauregard recorded a hat trick while Alex Maini (2), Mike Birney (1), and Tom Masterson (1) each got on the board for the Titans. Alex Maini (2), Mike Birney (1), Thomas Sible (1), and Scott Drummond (1) recorded one assist each.
