NEW ROCHELLE, New York – With a 14-1 win over the St. Francis Brooklyn Terries in its regular season finale, the Marist water polo team has officially clinched the #2 seed in the 2017 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship. Earlier in the day, the Red Foxes fell to the Virginia Military Institute Keydets 17-15 2OT.

With the results, Marist closes out the regular season with a 19-13 (11-3 MAAC) record for the programs best overall win percentage (.594) since the 2013 season.

In the game against the Keydets, senior co-captain Amanda Amorosa led the Red Foxes with three goals and five steals, while senior Nastassia McGlothlin chipped in three goals and two steals. Senior co-captain Jocelyn McQuade finished with three goals, sophomore Grace Doerfler chipped in two goals and one steal and junior co-captain Diana Carballo finished with one goal and five steals. Sophomore Susan Cantoni picked up one goal and one steal and freshmen Lexi Puhl and Anais Mathes each had one goal on the day.

In net, junior Jessical Hermosillo finished with six goals against and a season high 12 saves, while sophomore Hope Vickers had 11 goals against, one save two steals and one assist.

Versus the Terriers, Amorosa finished with three goals and one assist, while Cantoni had two goals and one steal. Freshman Carolyn Gauvin finished with two goals, freshman Justine Castro had one goal, one assist and four steals, Carballo had one goal two assists, McGlothlin had one goal, one assist and two steams, sophomore Katherine Tijerina and had one goal, one assist and sophomore Ariana Singer had one goal and one steal. Doerfler and Mathes each finished with one goal.

Between the pipes, Vickers finished with no goals against and three saves, freshman Carsen Horvatich had no goals against and five saves and Hermosillo finished with one goal against, seven saves, one steal and one assist.

VS VMI

McGlothlin and McQuade gave Marist the early 2-0 lead but scores by Natalie Rivas and Emma Noble tied the game at 2-2 with 3:21 remaining in the opening quarter. A goal by Tijerina with 1:36 left gave the Red Foxes the lead back and after one quarter it was 3-2 Marist.

Back-to-back-to-back goals by Amorosa Carballo and McQuade gave the Red Foxes a 6-2 lead with 4:49 left in the first half. A Sophia DelBondio goal made it 6-3 before Puhl scored at 1:22 to make it 7-3. Hayler Scott scored for the Keydets with 41 seconds left in the half to trim the score to 7-4 and the two teams headed into the half with Marist ahead by three.

Back-to-back goals by Bailey Huddleston and Sarah Dolitsky brought VMI to 7-6 with 6:15 left in the third quarter before Doerfler, Cantoni and Amorosa extended the Red Fox lead to 10-6 with 46 seconds left in the third. A goal by Natalie Rivas with 15 seconds left in the third quarter made it 10-7 and with eight minutes left in regulation it a three goal Marist lead.

Cecilya Lundy made it 10-8 Red Foxes before McGlothin extended the Marist lead to 11-8 with 6:38 left to play. Rivas and Deorfler exchanged goals with 6:11 and 5:55 left to bring the score to 12-9 before back-to-back goals by DelBondio and Lundy trimmed the deficit to 12-11 with 4:13 left to play. Amorosa made it a two goal game with her third with 3:19 left in regulation but goals by Rivas and Lundy tied the score with 20 seconds left in the game and the two sides headed to overtime.

McGlothlin and Barkley traded goals with 2:37 and 1:11 left in the first overtime period before McQuade gave the Red Foxes the 15-14 lead with 47 seconds left in the opening overtime and both teams headed into the second overtime with Marist ahead by one goal.

Delbondio scored with 1:44 left in the second overtime to tie the game before Barkley gave the Keydets the lead with 50 seconds left and DelBondio again sealed the 17-15 victory with on a goal with four seconds remaining.

VS ST FRANCIS

Amorosa, Cantoni and Amorosa gave Marist the 3-0 lead after the opening eight minutes.

Tijerina, Amorosa, McGlothlin and Doerfler extended the Red Fox lead to 7-0 at the half.

Singer, Carballo, Gauvin and Cantoni made it 11-0 with eight minutes left to play.

Castro, Gauvin and Mathes rounded out the scoring for Marist in the fourth quarter before Niccole Salomone got the Terriers on the board for the 14-1 final score.

Up next, the Red Foxes will head to the MAAC Championship held at McCann Natatorium in Poughkeepsie, NY on Saturday, April 29th-30th. Marist will be the #2 seed and will face off against the #3 seed VMI in the second semi-final game on April 29th at 2 PM.
