POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – Marist baseball redshirt junior Scott Boches (RHP) was selected by the Seattle Mariners in the 30th Round of the 2017 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft on Wednesday.
Boches becomes the eighth player under current head coach Chris Tracz to be selected in the MLB Draft and the 19th in program history.
In 16 appearances/13 starts in 2017, Boches went 6-5 with a team leading 2.72 ERA. In 86 innings pitched, he gave up 31 runs (26 earned) on 82 hits with 28 walks and 85 strikeouts for a 3.05 K/BB ratio and had a .245 batting average against. Boches was named a Gregg Olson Award Semi-Finalist, an award given to college baseball's top breakout player each season.
The Red Foxes currently have four players currently playing professional baseball.
Kevin McCarthy (2011-13) currently plays for the Omaha Storm Chasers, the AAA affiliate of the Kansas City Royals and was drafted by the team in the 16th round in 2013. McCarthy became the first former Marist player to have his contract purchased by an MLB team on Sept. 6th and became the first former Red Fox to appear in a MLB game when he made his Royals debut on Sept 9th at the Chicago White Sox. He was then called up to Kansas City again on May 29th of this year.
Zach Shank (2010-13) currently plays for the Tacoma Rainiers, the AAA affiliate of the Seattle Mariners and was drafted by the team in the 28th round in 2013. Shank played in 22 games for the Mariners during spring training in 2017 and hit .368 (7-for-19) with one double, six RBI, a .421 slugging percentage and a .538 on base percentage.
Jonathan Schwind (2009-11) is on the roster of the Altoona Curve, the AA affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates and was drafted by the team in the 41st round in 2011. He was called up to the AAA Indianapolis Indians in 2016.
Steve Laurino (2013-15) currently plays for the Frederick Keys, the A advanced affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles and was drafted by the team in 25th round in 2015.
