POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - The Marist women’s lacrosse team had its Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference winning streak snapped April 12 in an 18-6 loss to Canisius in Tenney Stadium. The Red Foxes are now 6-7 on the season and 2-2 in the conference play, while the Golden Griffins improved to 10-4 overall and 5-0 in the MAAC.

Freshman Samantha Mehalick netted a hat trick for the second straight game and sophomore Hailey Wagner had two assists and five draw controls. With three ground balls, sophomore Audrey Cerrone tied for the team lead and added a free position goal toward the end of the first stanza that knotted the game at five.

There were four ties in the opening half, as the Griffs scored 1:24 in before Marist junior Lauren Mazza got some quick rebuttal with a goal of her own. The Red Foxes took the lead on consecutive scores from Mehalick and a pair of Canisius free position goals put the Golden Griffins in front by two. The Red Foxes fought back to tie the score by the 5:05 mark and trailed 6-5 heading into the locker room at halftime.

Senior Alyssa Pitonzo lead the team with three ground ball pickups in the first half to give Marist an 11-9 edge. Classmate Abigail Witczak had made six saves by the break.

Mehalick opened up the scoring in the second half, securing a hat trick for the day on only five shots, but the Canisius defense held Marist off the board for the rest of the second half. The Griffs bursted out with a 4-0 run in just over two minutes and built a lead they would not relinquish.

Canisius sophomore Tessa Chad netted five goals on eight shots and junior Erica Evans contributed four goals and four draw controls. In goal junior Rebecca Van Laeken made eight saves to get her 10th win of the year.

The Red Foxes will wrap up their home stand at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 15, against Fairfield. Prior to the game Marist will honor its five seniors---Alyssa Pitonzo, Olivia Pitonzo, Natalie Bonaroti, Madison Calkins, and Witczak---in an on-field ceremony.
