STATEN ISLAND, New York – The Marist water polo made it a clean sweep of the weekend’s games with a convincing 20-3 win over the La Salle Explorers at Wagner College on Sunday. With the win, the Red Foxes improve to 18-12 (10-2 MAAC).

Sophomore Grace Doerfler led Marist on the day with four goals and four kickouts drawn, while freshman Anais Mathes finished with three goals (a career high), one assist, one kickout drawn and one steal. Senior co-captains Amanda Amorosa and Diana Carballo chipped in two goals, two assists and one steal and two goal and two assists respectively and freshman Carolyn Gauvin and Lexi Puhl finished with two goals and two assists and two goals, one assist and one steal respectively. Sophomore Katherine Tijerina chipped in one goal, three assists, one kickout drawn and four steals, freshman Bree Marmion had one goal, one assist and one steal, sophomore Ariana Singer and freshman Justine Castro finished with one goal, one assist and one steal and sophomore Susan Cantoni had one goal. Senior Nastassia McGlothlin chipped in one assist and three steals and sophomore Caoimhe Whitebloom finished with one steal.

In goal, sophomore Hope Vickers had three goals against and seven saves, junior Jessica Hermosillo had no goals against and one save and freshman Carsen Horvatich had seven saves and one steal.

Following a 26-1 Senior Day win for the Red Foxes at McCann Natatorium on March 25th, the first quarter of Sunday’s matchup proved to be a lot closer. Back-to-back goals by Stephanie Morales and Kacie Cios gave the Explorers the early 2-0 lead just 35 seconds into the game. However, four straight goals by Doerfler, Carballo (2) and Amorosa quickly gave Marist the 4-2 lead with 4:06 left in the opening quarter. Morales made it a one goal game with 3:20 left and the two teams heading into the second quarter of play with the Red Foxes ahead 4-3.

The remainder of the game was completely different with Marist holding La Salle scoreless for the remainder of the game as Doerfler (2), Singer, Castro and Puhl found the back of the net for the Red Foxes and a 9-3 halftime lead.

Mathes, Gauvin, Mathes, Marmion, Tijerina and Doerfler gave Marist the 15-3 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Cantoni Amorosa, Mathes, Puhl and Gauvin wrapped up the scoring for Marist in the fourth for the 20-3 win.

Up next, the Red Foxes close out their 2017 regular season with matchups against the Virginia Military Institute Keydets (10:30 AM) and St Francis Brooklyn Terriers (5:30 PM) on Saturday, April 15th at Iona College in New Rochelle, NY.
