HIGH POINT, North Carolina - The Marist women’s lacrosse team had its three-game winning streak snapped at High Point, losing 15-12 in a gritty offensive fight. The Red Foxes are 4-4 overall and the Panthers are 4-3.

Junior Lauren Mazza scored a career-high five goals for Marist and senior Olivia Pitonzo tied her career best by dishing out five assists. On defense junior Stefanie Wenz collected three ground balls and caused a pair of turnovers. Eight of the game’s 27 goals came on free position shots.

In a see-saw first half Marist tied the score twice with three goals on four shots. The Red Foxes’ run put them in front 5-3 and was highlighted by two scores off the stick of freshman Samantha Mehalick. Mehalick’s second goal came with Marist on the woman up.

Marist continued to win defensive battles, picking up ground balls and getting the shot clock down to single digits on the Panthers. The defense held High Point scoreless for 13:41 in the opening stanza and the Red Foxes went into the locker room with the 6-5 advantage.

The Panthers began to claw back in the second half, getting the lead back to 9-8 at the 19:40 mark. A Mazza goal tied the game for the sixth time and the scoreboard read 9-9, but High Point erupted for four unanswered goals and would maintain the lead the rest of the way. Marist senior Natalie Bonaroti picked up her fourth hat trick of the season on the game’s final goal with 14 seconds left.

Juniors Erica Perrotta and Brooke Stevens each netted four goals for the Panthers, which outshot the Red Foxes 43-32. High Point committed 16 turnovers but caused 13 from Marist.

Marist will take on UMass at 3 p.m. March 25 to conclude non-conference play.
