ALBANY, New York – The #10th-seeded Marist Men’s Basketball team fell to the #7 seed Canisius Golden Griffins, 77-73, in the first round of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship. The loss ends the Red Foxes’ season.

Brian Parker led the Red Foxes in scoring with 22 points on 10-for-15 shooting from the field. Khallid Hart would score 16 points for the Red Foxes, and Kentrall Brooks was the Red Foxes’ third scorer in double-digits with 11 points on 5-for-7 shooting from the field.

The Red Foxes entered the half trailing by just four, 36-32, despite 11 turnovers. The Marist defense was able to force the Griffs into eight turnovers of their own but a 14-8 scoring disparity in points off turnovers had Canisius ahead.

Hart led Marist in the first half, scoring 11 points on 5-for-8 shooting from the field. Brooks added six points on 3-for-4 shooting from the floor and Parker contributed with six points and four rebounds of his own.

Forced turnovers and forays to the basket by Isaiah Lamb helped keep Marist afloat in the first half as he went 0-for-1 from the field but knocked down four free throws.

After Parker started the new half with a basket to cut the deficit to two, Canisius rattled off a 10-1 run to take a 46-35 lead with 16:33 to go in the game.

An and-one from Parker, a deep triple by Funk, and a tough take to the hoop and an acrobatic lay-up from Hart would spark an 8-0 run for the Red Foxes that would pull them back to within three, 51-48.

Canisius would build the lead up again to as much as eight before back-to-back takes from Funk and Richie Mitchell would cut the Griffs lead down to four, 60-56, with 9:52 to go.

A monster baseline jam from Ryan Funk with just over seven minutes to go cut the Red Foxes deficit to just one. A defensive stop and then another hoop plus the harm from Parker would put the Red Foxes ahead for the first time since three minutes into the game.

With under two minutes to go in the game Canisius would capitalized off another Marist turnover, knocking down a triple to take the lead again, 70-69. The Griffs would stave off a Red Foxes comeback and hold on to win from there.

The Marist men's basketball team finished the season with an overall record of 8-24. This was the final game for the 2017 senior class of Khallid Hart and Kentrall Brooks. Hart finishes his career as Marist’s fourth all-time leading scorer (1,879 points).
