POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - The Red Fox Network’s Marist Minute highlights this past week’s events and provides an upcoming schedule for this week.
Men’s lacrosse won its season opener this week, beating Colgate 12-8 on Saturday, February 11. Senior J.D. Recor scored a game-high five goals and was named Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week. Junior Gannon Morrison led the Red Foxes with three assists while chipping in four goals of his own.
Women’s lacrosse also had its season opener on Saturday, but fell short against Army West Point, 13-12, in a riveting game. Freshman Samantha Mehalick posted team highs of four goals and four ground balls and sophomore Hailey Wagner led the Red Foxes with three assists and scored three goals to earn MAAC Offensive Player of the Week.
Women’s basketball went 0-2 this week, losing 79-57 at Quinnipiac on Thursday, February 9, and falling to Niagara in McCann Arena on Sunday, February 12. Freshman Rebekah Hand picked up her seventh MAAC Rookie of the Week award for her play in both games, averaging 16 points and eight rebounds.
Men’s basketball lost a pair of MAAC contests to Fairfield and Siena. Sophomore Brian Parker averaged 16.5 points per game in the 73-53 defeat on Thursday, February 9, and 84-77 loss on Saturday, February 11, respectively.
Women’s and men’s swimming and diving both competed in the MAAC Championships from Wednesday, February 8 to Saturday, February 11. The women’s team won its eighth straight MAAC championship on Saturday. Marist remained in first place for the entire four-day meet reaching 279 points after two days and 532 points the following day. Senior Meredith Wurtz won the 100-yard freestyle in 51.95 seconds and anchored Marist’s second place 400-yard freestyle relay team. She was named the MAAC Women’s Co-Outstanding Swimmer for the second straight year and shared the award with her relay teammate, junior Sara Nestrowitz. Junior Megan Berardelli took the top spot on the 1- and 3-meter diving boards on her way to her second straight Most Outstanding Diver honor. Head Coach Larry VanWagner earned his eighth career MAAC Women’s Swimming Coach of the Year honor.
The men’s team finished in second place with a total of 635 points over the four days. It fell short of just Rider, who scored 840.5 points. Senior Manuel Garcia capped his MAAC career with a silver medal in the 200-yard butterfly. His time of 1:52.03 nipped the third place finisher by .01 second.
Men’s and women’s track & field competed in the David Hemery Valentine Invitational held Friday, February 10, and Saturday, February 11, at Boston University. The men’s team saw athletes have record-breaking performances in multiple events including the 400 dash, 800 run, mile run, 3,000-meter run, 5,000-meter run, and the 4x400 relay. The women’s team saw junior Danisha Craig set a school record in the 400-meter dash with a time of 58.28 seconds.
Water Polo competed in the USCD Triton Invitational on Saturday, February 11, and Sunday, February 12, finishing 2-2. Following two defeats on the first day, they bounced back to win their final two games and claim 13th place in the 16-team tournament Sunday. With the victories against Santa Clara and Cal State East Bay on Day Two, Marist improves to 5-6 on the season.
