POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - The Marist men’s lacrosse team held its first official spring practice to prepare for the 2017 regular season Jan. 11 on Leonidoff Field at Tenney Stadium. During practice the squad split up into positon groups and ran some four on four red versus white drills as a team for about two hours.
The Red Foxes had fitness testing in the McCann Strength and Conditioning Center and a team lunch during their first day back on campus. At the lunch Marist celebrated its achievement of the highest team grade point average in program history from the Fall 2016 semester. There were 26 student-athletes on the squad who had a semester grade point average of 3.0 or above.
Marist will hold two-a-days through Sunday with team meetings scheduled in the afternoon between practices and later in the evening. The first of two preseason scrimmages for the Red Foxes is slated for 12 p.m. Jan. 28 at Boston University. Marist will host Wagner at 12 p.m. Feb. 4 in Tenney Stadium for the other scrimmage before opening the 2017 regular season at Colgate on Feb. 11. Opening faceoff against the Raiders is set for 1 p.m. Marist will host the 2014 Colonial Athletic Association Champion Drexel Dragons in its home opener at 1 p.m. March 4.
In the Inside Lacrosse Preseason Coaches’ Poll, released as part of the 2017 Face-Off Yearbook, Marist ranked no. 2 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference behind only defending champion Quinnipiac. Senior attack J.D. Recor, junior midfielder Gannon Morrison, senior defensive midfielder Jimmy Murphy and senior defender Frankie Brier were selected to the publication’s Preseason Coaches’ All-Conference Team at their respective positions.Tune in to the MAAC Lacrosse Preseason Awards Show at 7 p.m. Feb. 1 to see a recap of the 2016 season and how Marist stacks up in the conference heading into 2017.
