POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist women’s swimming and diving team compiled its second highest point total of the season in dual meet competition during a 171-120 victory over Southern Connecticut State on Jan. 10 in McCann Natatorium.

Coming out of a long layoff between dual meets, the Red Foxes went 1-2-3 in four events to earn the non-conference victory. Two of those top three Marist finishes came on the diving boards, with junior Megan Berardelli racking up first place scores of 230.17 points at one meter and 298.65 points at three meters. Sophomores Lauren Katz and Grace Casolo each finished second and third respectively on both boards.

In the swimming pool Marist posted the top three times in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle. Junior Sara Nestrowitz won the 200-yard event in 1:57.68 followed by senior Meredith Wurtz (1:59.05) and junior Deirdre Connor (2:00.31). Junior Melanie Newton touched first in the 500-yard event (5:19.46) to edge out Connor in second place (5:20.14) and sophomore Shannon Gordon (5:23.32) in third. Newton (10:51.63) placed just ahead of Gordon (10:52.10) in the 1,000-yard freestyle.

At the shorter distances Wurtz won two of the four events she raced, completing the 100-yard freestyle in 53.89 seconds and anchoring the Red Foxes’ first place 200-yard medley relay squad (1:53.30). She was second in the 50-yard freestyle by just .06 seconds.

Marist will get right back at it in non-conference play when it travels to Boston College for a 1 p.m. dual meet Jan. 14.
