POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – A first-place overall finish by junior Kristen Traub (Wayne, N.J.) led the Marist women’s cross country team to a first-place finish at Saturday’s season-opening Marist Invitational at Vassar Farm.
Traub had a time of 18:24.34 in the 5K race, and led four Red Foxes who finished in the top five. Senior Michelle Gaye (Greenlawn, N.Y.) took third in 18:51.63, followed by freshman Mara Schiffhauer (Tabernacle, N.J.) in fourth with a time of 18:59.22 and senior Christine Coughlin (Latham, N.Y.) in fifth at 19:13.01. The fifth scoring spot for the Red Foxes went to sophomore Janelle Solviletti (Billerica, Mass.), who placed ninth overall in 19:29.98.
Marist totaled 22 points, followed by Iona with 44, Central Connecticut State with 83 and Vassar with 98.
Following the men’s and women’s races, a Senior Day ceremony was held for the 16 members of the men’s and women’s cross country and track & field programs. The nine women honored were Gaye, Coughlin, Danielle Asaro (Pound Ridge, N.Y.), Megan Brady (Geneva, Ill.), Brianna Freestone (Ballston Spa, N.Y.), Alexandra McCahill (Holmdel, N.J.), Katie McEvoy (New Rochelle, N.Y.), Alexia Santiago (Bellmore, N.Y.) and Erin Thompson (Washington Township, N.J.).
Marist will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 13 at the Wolfie Invitational, hosted by Stony Brook.
