Marist Releases Women’s Basketball Non-Conference Schedule
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist Athletics Department released the women’s basketball team’s non-conference schedule on Thursday. In their 13th season under head coach Brian Giorgis, the Red Foxes will play nine games against non-conference opponents, including a three-game tournament at Baylor University, the BTI Classic. Three of the Red Foxes upcoming opponents reached the Women’s NIT and three earned berths in the NCAA Tournament.
The non-conference schedule features a conference breakdown that includes two teams from the Colonial Athletic Association and one each against teams from the Big East, Big 12, Mountain West, Atlantic Sun, America East, Patriot League, and Summit League.
“It’s a difficult and challenging schedule,” Giorgis said. “Hopefully it will do what it’s done in years past and get us ready for conference play.”
The Red Foxes play their first home game of the season against St. John’s of the Big East Conference on Monday, Nov. 24. Not only is this the first time since the 2001-02 season that the Red Storm have visited McCann, but St. John’s is also the team that Giorgis made his coaching debut against just a year later.
For the first time in three years Marist will open their season on the road with a Sunday, Nov. 16 matchup against the University of Delaware Blue Hens. Last year the Blue Hens played in their fourth consecutive Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) finals and made their seventh trip in school history to the Women’s NIT.
Following their game with the Blue Hens, the Red Foxes will remain on the road for a Saturday, Nov. 22 rematch with another CAA team, Northeastern. The Red Foxes hold a 3-2 all-time record versus the Huskies with their previous matchup coming just last year at McCann Arena. For the first time in Giorgis’ career, his Red Foxes eclipsed the century mark when they defeated Northeastern 103-66.
From there, the Red Foxes travel to Baylor University in Waco, Texas to take part in three games at the BTI Classic on Friday, Nov. 28, Saturday, Nov. 29, and Sunday, Nov. 30. For their first game on Friday the Red Foxes will take on the tournament host Baylor Lady Bears for the first time in school history. The Lady Bears are two-time NCAA Tournament champions, including a title as recent as 2012, and boast a coach in Kim Mulkey with a coaching resume as impressive as they come. In 14 seasons, Mulkey has attained 404 career victories.
The next day the Red Foxes are matched up with the Utah State Aggies from the Mountain West Conference. This is another first-time matchup for the Red Foxes. The Aggies were newcomers to their conference last year but posted a 15-16 record.
Marist will conclude its stint at the BTI Classic by taking on Stetson University. The Hatters posted a 16-2 record last year in the Atlantic Sun Conference as well as a 27-8 record overall and spot in the Women’s NIT. These two teams have never previously faced each other.
The Red Foxes return home to cap off their non-conference schedule with games against the University of Albany, Boston University, and South Dakota State.
Marist will look to avenge an early season road loss from last year when the University of Albany comes into McCann Arena on Wednesday, Dec. 10. The Great Danes won a back-and-forth affair last year and went on to win the America East with a 15-1 conference record and earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament.
The Red Foxes take on another familiar opponent on Saturday, Dec. 13 when they take on Boston University for the sixth time since the 2008-09 season. Marist holds a 4-2 record over the Terriers and are coming off a road win against them last year. New coach Katy Steding will look to turn the tide with her first appearance in this long standing non-conference matchup.
To conclude the non-conference schedule, the Red Foxes will face a newcomer to McCann Arena. The Sunday, Dec. 21 game against South Dakota State will be the first time Marist will face off against the Jackrabbits. South Dakota State is coming off a strong postseason run that included a trip to the Women’s NIT Final Four.
Game times and the full 20-game Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference schedule will be announced at a later date.
