POUGHKEEPSIE – Coming off one of its top seasons in program history, the Marist volleyball team has reported for preseason camp.

The Red Foxes are coming off a 2013 campaign in which they won a share of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular-season championship for the first time, and went 21-9 overall. This season, Marist was picked first in the MAAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll, and senior middle blocker Mackenzie Stephens (Holland, Mich.) was named MAAC Preseason Player of the Year. Reigning MAAC Libero of the Year Brooke Zywick (Garden City, Mich.), a senior, and junior outside hitter Courtney Shaw (Centennial, Colo.) were named to the Preseason All-MAAC Team.

“We’re obviously excited to be recognized as the preseason number one,” said Head Coach Tom Hanna, the reigning MAAC Coach of the Year who’s heading into his ninth season. “It’s a great achievement for our team and the individuals who were recognized. There’s a little bit of an expectation from those outside the McCann Center who feel we’re going to do a great job.

“With that being said, we haven’t won anything yet. We’re going to try to work through our process, stay humble, stay grounded and hope that will produce the result we’re looking for.”

The Red Foxes had physicals and a mandatory NCAA meeting in the morning, followed by testing in the afternoon. The team’s first practice was scheduled for Monday evening.

Marist will open its season at the Boston College Invitational on Aug. 29-30. The first of the Red Foxes’ 10 matches at McCann Arena will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 10 against Army. Marist will open MAAC play on Saturday, Sept. 20 against Canisius.
