FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Marist softball team (27-23, 16-4 MAAC) fell to the Iona Gaels (23-21, 14-6 MAAC) in a 6-2 contest in today’s Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Softball Championship game.

The Gaels struck first, notching four runs off of three hits in the bottom of the second. Iona capitalized on a double to right field and a throwing error to claim three runs. The Gaels struck again with an RBI double to clinch the 4-0 lead over Marist.

The Red Foxes were unable to answer back, as senior Alyssa Zahka (Lexington, Mass.) was Marist’s only hit in the first four innings. Freshman Rebecca Freeman (Robbinsville, N.J.) added a hit in the fifth, but the Red Foxes would leave two stranded to close out the top of the inning.

In the top of the sixth, the Red Foxes cut the Gaels’ lead in half. Freeman notched her second hit of the day with a two-run RBI single through the left side, as Zahka and senior Aly Klemmer (Hamilton, N.J.) scored for Marist.

The Gaels answered back in the bottom of the inning with two runs to reclaim their four-run (6-2) lead over Marist. The Red Foxes would get no closer, as Iona clinched its place in the MAAC Championship Finals game.

Freeman led the Red Foxes with two hits and two RBIs, as Zahka posted one run and one hit for Marist. Defensively, senior Haley Birnbaum (Lido Beach, N.Y.) notched eight putouts for the team, while sophomore Kyrsten Van Natta (Maplewood, N.J.) added five assists.

The Red Foxes will play tomorrow against the winner of the Manhattan-Siena game. First pitch is set for 12:30 p.m.
