FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Marist softball team (27-22, 16-4 MAAC) defeated Monmouth (22-20, 12-8 MAAC) 4-0 to open its Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship Tournament play.

Junior Melanie White (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) kicked off the game with back-to-back strikeouts. The Hawks went on to load the bases before Marist would force them to leave three stranded. White went on to retire the side in the second, as she compiled five strikeouts in just two innings.

Freshman Janna Korak (Huntsville, Ala.) posted the Red Foxes’ first hit of the outing, as she lined up the middle in the bottom of the second. She would be left on base, as the matchup remained scoreless for the first three innings.

In the bottom of the fourth, sophomore Kyrsten Van Natta (Maplewood, N.J.) singled to left field and went on to steal her 23rd base of the season. Senior Alyssa Zahka (Lexington, Mass.) nailed an RBI double to right center, as Marist took a 1-0 lead over the Hawks. Up next, Korak notched her second hit of the game, as she singled to center field for Zahka to score for the 2-0 lead. As Marist tallied its third run of the outing, sophomore Nicole Cheek (Simi Valley, Calif.) posted an RBI single to right field. Senior Haley Birnbaum (Lido Beach, Calif.) also singled for senior Aly Klemmer (Hamilton, N.J.) to score to give the Red Foxes the four-run go-ahead.

Korak and Cheek led Marist with two hits apiece, while the scoring and RBIs were spread throughout the roster as the Red Foxes bated through the lineup in the fourth inning. White pitched a complete game to take the win, claiming her second shutout in a row. In seven innings, she compiled eight strikeouts, while only walking one batter and allowing three hits for no runs.

The Red Foxes will continue MAAC Championship Tournament play tomorrow against the third-seeded Iona Gaels. The time is to be determined.
