BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Marist women’s lacrosse team (14-4, 7-1 MAAC) fell to Canisius in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) women’s lacrosse championship game on Sunday, 11-9. Senior captains Jamie Romano (Kings Park, N.Y.) and Tierney Larson (Fairfield, Conn.) led the Red Foxes with four points apiece.

Romano notched a team-high three goals and one assist while Larson had one goal and three assists. Sophomore Allison Gionta (Eastport, N.Y.) notched two goals and had a team-high three caused turnovers. Junior Kirsten Viscount (Smithtown, N.Y.) tallied two goals while classmate Erin Schroeder (Vera Beach, Fla.) added one. Freshman Abigail Witczak (Mendham, N.J.) made five saves in the net for Marist. Junior Christine Astarita (Kennett Square, Pa.), senior Bailey Knapton (Canandaigua, N.Y.), and Witczak collected three ground balls each.

Back-to-back goals by Schroeder and Larson in the first minute of play gave Marist an early 2-0 lead over the Griffs with 29:08 left in the first half. Tori Quinn netted two straight goals in a one minute span to tie the game at two-all with 24:49 to go in the first. Romano scored her first of three at the 20:10 mark to give Marist a 3-2 lead.

Canisius’ Taylor Giglio converted on two straight shots followed by one from Meghan Cuddy to give the Griffs their biggest lead of the game thus far with 15:09 remaining in the first. Consecutive goals by Romano and Viscount would knot the game at five each with 8:44 to go in the opening period. Quinn snuck in one last goal with nine seconds left in the first half to give the Griffs a 6-5 advantage at half.

Canisius scored three straight goals to open the second half to secure a four goal lead with 18:49 left in regulation. Marist battled back with three straight goals of its own by Gionta, Viscount, and Romano to cut the Griffs lead to one with 13:30 to go in the second. Goals by Cuddy and Giglio would increase Canisius’ lead to three approaching the five minute mark. Gionta netted the final goal of the game with a minute and a half to go. The Red Foxes had opportunities at the end of the game but were unable to complete the comeback as Canisius captured its fourth consecutive MAAC Championship title.

Gionta, Witczak, and junior Sheri Fauvell (Moorestown, N.J.) were named to the MAAC All-Tournament Team. Marist finished the season a record-breaking 14-4 overall and 7-1 in the MAAC, including a share of the MAAC Regular Season Championship and the top seed in the tournament for the first time in program history.
