POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist softball team (24-22, 14-4 MAAC) swept the Canisius Griffins (16-30, 6-12 MAAC), as the Red Foxes hosted a pair of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) games today.

Game One

Marist kicked off the scoring in the bottom of the first, and never looked back throughout the remainder of the outing. Sophomore Kyrsten Van Natta (Maplewood, N.J.) doubled to left center for sophomore Maureen Duddy (San Mateo, Calif.) to claim the Red Foxes’ first run of the game. Senior Alyssa Zahka (Lexington, Mass.) added two more runs with a homer to left center, as Marist posted a 3-0 lead over the Golden Griffins.

In the next inning, Van Natta tacked on another RBI as she notched a sacrifice fly to center field for sophomore Nicole Cheek (Simi Valley, Calif.) to score.

The Red Foxes rounded out the scoring with another run in the bottom of the fifth. As Zahka grounded out to second, Van Natta claimed a run of her own for Marist to clinch the 5-0 shutout over Canisius.

Van Natta led Marist with two runs, two hits and two RBIs. On the defensive end, senior Aly Klemmer (Hamilton, N.J.) posted 12 outs, while seionr Haley Birnbaum (Lido Beach, Calif.) and junior Melanie White (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) added three assists each. White posted the shutout for Marist, improving her record to 6-6 for the season. In seven innings, she compiled two strikeouts, only allowing five hits and no runs against 25 batters faced.

Game Two

The Red Foxes posed their second shutout of the day over Canisius, as they struck hard in the first inning and never relinquished a run throughout the day. Junior Janine Lalli (Eastchester, N.Y.) pitched a one-hit shutout. In five innings, she posted two strikeouts.

In the bottom of the first Zahka doubled down the right field line for Van Natta and Duddy to post two for Marist. Zahka went on to score as well after Klemmer grounded out to second.

Marist kept the runs coming in the second. Duddy reached first on a bunt for Birnbaum and freshman Jordynn Barrera (Clinton, Utah) to advance across home plate for the Red Foxes to boast a 5-0 lead over the Griffins.

Duddy claimed yet another run for Marist in the bottom of the fourth, giving Marist a six-run lead. To close out the game, Marist notched two more runs to close the nightcap in five innings. Sophomore Colleen McWilliams doubled to kick off the inning, as she went on to score after Cheek reached on an error. Cheek advanced to third on a wild pitch and went on to tally a run for Marist as Barrera singled to first.

With three hits and two runs, Duddy led Marist offensively in the second outing. She and Zahka also posted two RBIs apiece for Marist. Defensively, Klemmer tallied five putouts, while Barrera added three assists.

Marist will host Saint Peter’s tomorrow to close out the regular season, as the team kicks off the day to celebrate the Class of 2014 for Senior Day at 11:40 a.m. First pitch of the doubleheader will follow at noon.
