POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist softball team (26-22, 16-4 MAAC) swept the Saint Peter’s Peacocks (10-40, 4-14 MAAC) to clinch the regular season Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) title for the first time in program history. The Red Foxes will now enter the MAAC Championship Tournament as the No. 1 seed.

Game One

The Red Foxes came out strong, notching two runs to start game one. Senior Alyssa Zahka (Lexington, Mass.) doubled to right center for sophomore Kyrsten Van Natta to start the scoring for Marist. After freshman Janna Korak (Huntsville, Ala.) reached and advanced to second from laying down a bunt to the third baseman, junior Taylor Kuzma (Feehold, N.J.) capitalized on a throwing error with a run of her own.

Marist continued its scoring streak in the bottom of the second with four more runs. Kuzma doubled to center field for Van Natta and Duddy to tack on two more for the Red Foxes. After freshman Rebecca Freeman (Robbinsvile, N.J.) reached on a fielding error by the short stop, sophomore Colleen McWilliams (Monrovia, Calif.) scored. With the bases loaded, senior Aly Klemmer (Hamilton, N.J.) was walked for Zahka to notch another run before closing out the inning.

The Red Foxes kept the runs coming, adding three more in the bottom of the third. With the bases loaded, Korak notched a three-run double to right center for Zahka, McWilliams, and Van Natta to score. Marist went on to clinch its third shutout of the weekend in just five innings.

Van Natta led Marist with three runs, while Korak stepped up with two hits and three RBIS in the victory. Both Zahka and senior Haley Birnbaum (Lido Beach, Calif.) posted four outs apiece, while five separate Red Foxes tallied assists for Marist. Senior Paige Lewis (Temecula, Calif.) took the win for Marist, improving her season record to 11-6. In five innings, she recorded three strikeouts in the two-hit shutout.

Game Two

Marist stuck first yet again, posting two runs in the first. Korak notched a two-run homer to left field to kick things off for the Red Foxes. The Peacocks responded with their first run of the day in the top of the second.

Marist answered with another homer in the outing, as Birnbaum nailed a two-run shot to left center that bounced off the top of the wall, and went over. The Red Foxes added another run in the bottom of the third, as sophomore Nicole Cheek (Simi Valley , Calif.) singled to the shortstop for Korak to score.

The Red Foxes posted a 7-1 lead over Saint Peter’s, as Van Natta also notched a two-run homer to left field in the bottom of the sixth. Marist would clinch the victory to close out its season on top.

With two runs apiece, Duddy and Korak each notched two runs and two hits in the outing. Korak, Birnbaum, and Van Natta also nabbed two RBIs each for Marist with their three homers. Defensively, Zahka posted 10 putouts, while she, Van Natta, and Birnbaum added an assist apiece. Freshman Jayne Oberdorf (Greensburg, Pa.) claimed the win for Marist, pitching her first complete game and win of her career. In seven innings, she compiled a career-high 10 strikeouts.

Marist will head to the MAAC Championship Tournament from May 8-11, as the first seed. The Red Foxes open tournament play at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, as their opponent is to be determined.
