LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – The Marist women’s lacrosse team (13-2, 7-0 MAAC) picked up its 10th straight win on Wednesday afternoon as the Red Foxes took down Siena (4-12, 2-5 MAAC), 10-9. With the win, Marist clinched the No. 1 seed for the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Tournament and at least a share of the regular season title. The Red Foxes improve to 13-2 overall and remain undefeated in conference play, sitting at 7-0. The 13 wins set a new program record for wins in a single season.

Sophomore Allison Gionta (Eastport, N.Y.) led Marist with four points while junior Kirsten Viscount (Smithtown, N.Y.) recorded three points. Gionta tallied three goals and an assist while Viscount netted one goal but dished out two assists. Sophomore Kara McHugh (Madison, Conn.) had two goals and led the team with two caused turnovers and four ground balls. Junior Erin Schroeder (Vero Beach, Fla.) had two goals while senior captains Jamie Romano (Kings Park, N.Y.) and Tierney Larson (Fairfield, Conn.) scored one each. Junior Emily Leonard (Brookville, Conn.) added an assist.

Romano won a team-high five draw controls and added an assist. Freshman goalkeeper Abigail Witczak (Mendham, N.J.) made five saves in the net for the Red Foxes to seal the win for Marist.

The opening four minutes of play were packed with action as Marist climbed ahead to a 5-1 lead with 26:28 left in the first half. Gionta scored the first and the fifth goals while Romano, Schroeder, and McHugh all got on the board. Three different Saints would score in the ensuing 10 minutes as Siena pulled within one of Marist.

Each team scored two more goals to close the half to result in a 7-6 edge for Marist at the half. Schroeder scored her second of the game at the 15:31 mark. After seven scoreless minutes of action, Siena’s Cara McQuillan pulled the Saints back within one. Larson scored off a pass from Viscount at the 5:14 mark to push Marist back ahead by two but the cushioned lead was temporary as Lauren Smith netted a goal for the Saints with 1:04 remaining to decrease Siena’s halftime deficit.

Maddie Devine scored one of her three goals of the afternoon in the first two minutes of the second half to tie the game at seven-all. Marist and Siena traded goals for the remainder of play, with the Red Foxes’ last goal unanswered by the Saints. McHugh scored an unassisted goal at the 22:35 mark to give Marist a slight 8-7 edge. Three minutes later, Devine completed her hat trick to knot the game at eight.

Viscount got on the board with 15:50 to go to give Marist an 9-8 advantage but Siena responded with a goal at the 12:22 mark to tie the game again at nine-all. After three and a half scoreless minutes, a Siena foul resulted in a free-position shot for Gionta. Gionta scored to give Marist a 10-9 lead with 8:49 left in the second half. The Red Foxes shut down Siena for the remainder of the half and the Saints were unable to respond to give Marist the 10-9 victory.

Marist hosts Monmouth in its final regular season game of the year on Saturday, April 26. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at Tenney Stadium. Admission is free and open to the public. Prior to the first draw, the women’s lacrosse class of 2014 will be honored.
