Women’s Lacrosse To Face MAAC Rival Siena On Wednesday

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist women’s lacrosse team (12-2, 6-0 MAAC) travels upstate on Wednesday, April 23 to face Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) rival, Siena (4-11, 2-4 MAAC). The game is slated to begin at 4 p.m. in Loudonville, N.Y.

The Red Foxes, who have not lost a game since Mar. 7, are hoping to extend their nine game winning streak and remain undefeated in conference play. With Marist’s win on Saturday against Fairfield, the women’s lacrosse team matched the program’s record for victories in a single season with 12.

Sophomore Allison Gionta (Eastport, N.Y.) leads the Red Foxes with 45 points on 32 goals and 13 assists. Senior Jamie Romano (Kings Park, N.Y.) has 35 points by way of 32 goals and three assists while sophomore Kara McHugh (Madison, Conn.) matches Romano’s 35 points with 22 goals and 13 assists.

Last Time Out: Marist gained sole possession of first place in the MAAC with a 13-6 rout of Fairfield. The Stags were previously undefeated in conference play as well. McHugh led Marist with four goals. Gionta, Romano, freshman Natalie Bonaroti (Pittsburgh, Pa.), and junior Kirsten Viscount (Smithtown, N.Y.) netted two goals apiece and Gionta added an assist. Senior Tierney Larson (Fairfield, Conn.) scored a goal and dished out an assist in her hometown. Junior Emily Leonard (Brookville, Conn.) contributed two assists in the win.

Romano won five draw controls while fellow senior captain Bailey Knapton (Canandaigua, N.Y.) won four. Romano and junior Christine Astarita (Kennett Square, Pa.) caused a team-high two turnovers. Freshman goalkeeper Abigail Witczak (Mendham, N.J.) made 11 saves in the net for Marist.

Witczak and Romano earned conference player of the week honors this week for their performances against Manhattan and Fairfield. Romano was named MAAC Defensive Player of the Week while Witczak earned Rookie of the Week honors.

Last Meeting: Marist topped Siena 13-4 on April 6, 2013 to earn their second conference win of the year. Romano led three Red Foxes with hat tricks as she finished with four goals. Ashley Miller (Montville, N.J.) and Viscount each accounted for three goals each. Goalkeeper Ashley Casiano (South Windsor, Conn.) led a stalwart defensive effort with 12 saves and three ground balls.

Scouting the Saints: Siena sits at 4-11 overall and 2-4 in the MAAC this season. The Saint’s topped Wagner 12-8 and St. Bonaventure 16-7 in non-conference play. In the MAAC, Siena picked up a 12-7 win at Manhattan and a 15-11 rout of Quinnipiac most recently on senior day. Erin Mossop, Maddie Devine, Julia Sirianni, and Sarah Croutier each netted hat trick for the Saints in the win.

Croutier leads Siena with 37 points on a team-high 29 goals and eight assists. Mossop has a team second-best 33 points by way of 22 goals and 11 assists. Alyssa Treanor isn’t far behind with 30 points, including 18 goals and 12 assists.

Following this matchup, Marist hosts Monmouth in its final regular season game of the year on Saturday, April 26. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at Tenney Stadium. Admission is free and open to the public. Prior to the first draw, the women’s lacrosse class of 2014 will be honored.
