EDISON, N.J. - Freshman goalkeeper Abigail Witczak (Mendham, N.J.) and senior captain Jamie Romano (Kings Park, N.Y.) have been honored this week by the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). Witczak was named rookie of the week and Romano was named defensive player of the week. This is Witczak’s fourth conference award this season while Romano picks up her second of the season.
The Marist women’s lacrosse team improved to 12-2 overall and 6-0 in conference play this week to claim sole possession of first place in the MAAC. The Red Foxes defeated Manhattan 13-8 and Fairfield, who was previously undefeated in conference action, 13-6.
Romano won a combined 12 draw controls, collected four ground balls, and caused two turnovers. She won seven draw controls against Manhattan and five against Fairfield. Romano also had a combined five goals, including three against Manhattan and two against Fairfield.
Witczak made a combined 18 saves against Manhattan and Fairfield. She made seven saves against Manhattan for a save percentage of 46.7 percent and 11 against Fairfield in a battle for first place in the MAAC for a save percentage of 56.2 percent.
Marist continues its pursuit of perfection in the MAAC on Wednesday, April 23 as the Red Foxes take on Siena. First draw is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Loudonville, N.Y.
