POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist women’s lacrosse team (11-2, 5-0 MAAC) clinched a spot in the 2014 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Tournament on Wednesday afternoon with a 13-8 rout of Manhattan. With win, the Red Foxes improved to 11-2 overall and remains a perfect 5-0 in MAAC play to maintain its first place standing. Marist also extended its winning streak to eight games.

The Red Foxes were led by sophomore Allison Gionta (East Port, N.Y.) with seven points by five goals and two assists. Sophomore Kara McHugh (Madison, Conn.) had a team-high four assists. Senior Jamie Romano (Kings Park, N.Y.) had three goals while classmate Tierney Larson (Fairfield, Conn.) netted one goal of her own and dished out two assists. Juniors Kirsten Viscount (Smithtown, N.Y.), Lexi Brannigan (Loudonville, N.Y.), Jackie DiMaria, and Erin Schroeder (Vera Beach, Fla.) all contributed one goal each.

Marist won 18 draw controls to Manhattan’s five; McHugh and Romano combined for 14 of the 18 draw controls. The Red Foxes outshot the Jaspers 31-to-22 and were successful on all 14 clear attempts.

Three Red Foxes opened up the game with one goal apiece to give Marist an early 3-0 lead with 24:01 remaining in the first half. Donna Jo DiNorcia took advantage of a man-up opportunity and scored for the Jaspersat the 19:58 mark to cut the Red Fox lead, 3-1. Back-to-back goals by Gionta would push Marist ahead 5-1 with 15:37 to play. DiNorcia and Kelsey Rehain got on the board for Manhattan with consecutive goals to pull within two of Marist with 12:22 left in the half. Viscount and Romano each netted one goal to end the half to earn the Red Foxes a 7-3 advantage leading into the locker room.

Manhattan kicked off the second half with two quick goals by DiNorcia and Ranagan to trail Marist 7-5 with 28:06 still to play. Four straight goals by the Red Foxes would propel Marist ahead of the Jaspers 11-5 with 21:04 to go. Two more goals by Manhattan’s Ranagan and Rehain would knock down Marist’s lead 11-7 with 16:03 left in the second half.

DiMaria netted her lone goal at the 11:25 mark, followed by Ranagan’s third of the afternoon as Marist led the Jaspers 12-8 with less than 10 minutes to play. The final minutes would be highlighted by one final goal by Schroeder to end the game as Marist walked away with a 13-8 victory.

Marist returns to action, fighting for their No. 1 standing on Saturday, April 19 against Fairfield, the only other unbeaten team in the MAAC. First draw is set for 1 p.m. in Fairfield, Conn.
