The Marist football team has just completed its second week of spring practice. The Red Foxes are now less two weeks away from their annual Spring Football game on Sunday, April 27 at 4 p.m.  Here is a look at the Marist defense, which returns six starters from last season:

Defensive Line
Position Coach: Tunde Agboke
After losing the PFL Defensive Player of the Year in Terrence Fede, along with Chris Katerianakis, Kevin Stark, and Steven Diomede, the Red Foxes return only one starting defensive lineman in senior Nicholas Foster, a two-time All-PFL Honorable Mention nose tackle. Foster will lead the this group along with junior defensive end Landon Moore, who was also named to the All-PFL Honorable Mention team. Moore was second on the team with 6.5 sacks and 14 tackles for loss. Senior defensive end Demetrius Williams and junior defensive end John Brennan will be battling for a starting position. Junior Richard Van Cleft and sophomore Daniel Njoku figure to see playing time.

Linebacker
Position Coach: Matt Moody
Marist returns all three starting linebackers in senior Paul Sakowski, senior Hugh Kirwan, and senior Mike Kagafas. All three linebackers have been named captains for the upcoming season and all have plenty of experience, with each returning for their fifth season. Sakowski was named to the All-PFL First Team last season and was second on the team in tackles last season with 63, with seven tackles for loss and four sacks. This is Sakowski’s second consecutive season as being named captain. Kirwan recorded 35 tackles last year, with 2.5 tackles for loss and one sack. Kagafas recorded 56 tackles last year, with 6.5 tackles for loss and two sacks. Senior Michael Paen, senior Miguel Sandoval and sophomore Ruben Avalos figure to see plenty of time at the position also.

Cornerback
Position Coach: Larry Riley
After losing starting cornerback Jack Marston, junior Zachary Quarles returns as the lone returning starter at the position. Quarles was named to the All-PFL Honorable Mention team last season after recording 47 tackles, two interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown. Senior Vinny Fuschetto, senior Craig Thompson, sophomore Cameron Gibson, and sophomore Carter Odenweller all will vie for playing time.

Safety
Position Coach: Clarence Johnson
The Red Foxes return one starting safety in senior Connor Mathias, after losing Nick Kaszei, the team leader in tackles and fifth-year senior Tyler Ramsey. Mathias was named All-PFL Honorable Mention last season after recording 46 tackles, four tackles for loss, two sacks, and one interception. Senior Zach Adler returns after leading the team in interceptions each of the last two season with four in both years. Adler also recorded two sacks, four tackles for loss and 30 tackles in 2013. Senior Matthew Semelsberger also saw significant time for the Red Foxes last year, recording 31 tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss. Senior James Holodnak figures to see plenty of playing time, along with junior Michael Marston and sophomore Kwame Darko.
