LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – The Marist softball team (13-18, 4-1 MAAC) traveled to Rider today for a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) doubleheader. In the first game, the Red Foxes fell 5-0 before the team came back to clinch a 16-3 win in the second game.

Game One

In game one, the matchup remained scoreless until the fourth inning. The Broncs tallied three runs to the board. The Red Foxes were unable to answer back, as Rider tacked on two more runs in the sixth to claim the 5-0 win over Marist.

Junior Taylor Kuzma (Freehold, N.J.) led Marist with two hits, while sophomore Maureen Duddy (San Mateo, Calif.), freshman Janna Korak (Huntsville, Ala.), and freshman Rebecca Freeman (Robbinsville, N.J.) also added a hit apiece. Junior Janine Lalli (Eastchester, N.Y.) took the loss for Marist, as she compiled seven strikeouts and allowed seven hits in six innings.

Game Two

The Red Foxes answered back in game two with a 16-3 victory over the Broncs. Marist opened the outing with five runs in the first inning. Senior Aly Klemmer (Hamilton, N.J.) singled up the middle to score Korak and Duddy. Freeman went on to double to left field as sophomore Nicole Cheek (Simi Valley, Calif) crossed the plate. Before closing out the inning, senior Alyssa Zahka (Lexington, Mass.) singled to right field for Freeman and Klemmer to notch two more runs for Marist.

The Broncs came back with one run in the bottom of the first, before Marist tacked on two more in the second. Sophomore Kyrsten Van Natta (Maplewood, Calif.) singled up the middle for senior Haley Birnbaum (Lido Beach, N.Y.) to claim a run. Also for the Red Foxes, Korak singled to center field to draw a run in from Van Natta.

Marist kept the runs coming, adding four more in the third. Freeman, Zahka, Duddy, and Kuzma each added a run for the Red Foxes in the inning. In the fourth, Duddy singled to center field for Zahka to cross the plate to give Marist a 12-1 lead over Rider.

The Broncs added another run in the bottom of the fourth before Marist notched four more runs to seal the win in five innings. Kuzma nailed a homer to left center to claim her fifth of the season. Also for Marist, Korak, Lalli and Freeman scored to close out the game.

To lead Marist in the outing, Korak and Freeman posted three hits each, while Duddy added three RBIs for the win. Defensively, Freeman claimed four putouts as Van Natta added two assists. Senior Paige Lewis (Temecula, Calif.) took the win for Marist. She compiled three strikeouts while allowing only two earned runs in five innings to improve her season record to 7-4.

The Red Foxes head to Fairfield to make up the second game of its original doubleheader against Fairfield. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. on Tuesday as Marist continues MAAC play.
