Softball to Host Army Before Continuing MAAC Play
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist softball team (10-17, 3-0 MAAC) will host its second pair of games this Saturday against Army before continuing Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play at Rider on Sunday.
Marist is at top of the of the MAAC standings with a 3-0 conference record so far in the season. Junior Taylor Kuzma (Freehold, N.J.) leads the team with a .353 batting average as she has compiled 24 hits, four of those being home runs. She is followed by sophomore Kyrsten Van Natta (Maplewood, N.J.) with a close .329 batting average. Van Natta has tallied 26 runs and five homers while also adding 20 RBIs to lead the Red Foxes. Junior Janine Lalli (Eastchester, N.Y.) has a team best 2.98 ERA, posting a 4-3 record in 11 appearances this season.
Last Time Out:
The Red Foxes split a two-game non-conference series with Lehigh on Tuesday. In the first game Marist fell 6-3 despite a three-run homer from sophomore Nicole Cheek (Simi Valley, Calif.). The team bounced back in the second game, scoring 11 unanswered runs to rally past Lehigh for an 11-10 victory.
Marist posted 17 of its 24 hits in the second outing. Sophomore Maureen Duddy (San Mateo, Calif.) and Van Natta compiled three runs and two hits each. Also for the Red Foxes, Kuzma notched two hits, while freshman Rebecca Freeman (Robbinsville, N.J.) also claimed three runs. Senior Paige Lewis (Temecula, Calif.) took the win for Marist, tallying two strikeouts and no earned runs in 3.2 innings.
Army: Army is currently 17-18 overall and 5-4 in the Patriot League. Army has won eight of their last 11 games they have played. The Black Knights fell to Fordham 6-0 in their last outing. Kasey McCravey has a .402 batting average as well as a team best .664 slugging percentage. In the circle, Caroline Smith leads the team with a 2.76 ERA, posting a record of 11-8.
Rider: Rider has a 3-22 overall record and are 1-3 in MAAC play. They stand 10th in the MAAC, only ahead of Saint Peter’s by a single game. Rider is coming off of an emotional 5-0 loss against Saint Joseph’s, while also falling to Villanova 9-2 this past week. Before meeting up with the Red Foxes, Rider will head to Conn. for a double header against Fairfield on Saturday.
The first pitch is set for noon tomorrow to kick off the non-conference doubleheader, before Marist looks to clinch two conference games on the road on Sunday at 1 p.m.
